Hello! I'm using a bss fds 310 to bi amp my jbl 4530 speaker system with great success, recently i purchase a JBL 5234 (not 5234a) with 800hz cards inside. Im thinking of recap it, put some rca on the back and give it a try! Many said that 18db is better than the 24db of the bss and will be an improvement in my hifi system. What else can i improve in this crossover? Whats the difference between the 5234 and 5234a except the deep switches?

In my own opinion! But I’m sure someone else will have something else to say!

i would use what JBL specified when they designed the speakers. If they say 12 octaves! Use 12. If 18! Use 18 and the frequency that goes with it!
The 5234 is not the same than the 5234A.
if I was you, i would sale the 5234 to whom would need it and buy a 5234A. On the A, you have little switches that allows to set it up boosting or lowering lows depending what speakers you have...

check the manual available on line...

Not easy to find the A version. I don't care much about the low freq boosting deep switches to be honest, but i dont know what else is improved in that model

Try to find a 5235 instead, much better in terms of electronic than 5234 but also to 5234A. Crossover boards are compatible.

In Berga (who owns 4350 replicas) thread there is a link to an old thread I wrote on 5235, with crossovers schematics, formulas..
Sorry it is in French, I never got the free time to do the translation:
JBL 5235: http://vintage-jbl.forumpro.fr/t3066-filtre-actif-jbl-urei-5235 (you can see pictures/measurements of a 18dB card for 4355 made using a JBL blank card).
JBL 5234: http://vintage-jbl.forumpro.fr/t3212-filtre-actif-jbl-urei-5234

I can send you by email Eagle PCB files for 12 and 18 cards if you would like to build them or having them built.

I had recetly the opportunity to listen to JBL 4355 with a 24dB/oct LR active crossover, and it was perfectly working. Just try the three options 12/18/24.
You can do 12 and 18dB crossover boards and just by swaping them do the comparison by yourself. You can also start with your 5234 (do not modify it it will be easier for saling it after), and change later.

Output circuit is better for handling low impedances.
But as I said 5235 is much better with 5532 opamp on the output.

In my thread on the French jbl forum you'll see also pictures of mods I did, replacing opamps for more modern ones, and placing precision resistors.

Owns 4355's!
