Hi,

I plan to place a super horn tweeter on top of 4430 toimprove its performance in ultra high frequency, will it works? Probably look for Fostex ultra horn tweeter unitsas 045be is too expensive and hard to find in Ebay.

Any advice?

Try to find a used JBL 077 tweeter. A great tweeter. In my opinion, better than any Fostex tweeter.-RUDY

Hi 4344,

If You can find JBL 077 (blue diaphragm) in good condition that would be very, very good solution, but proper network work has to be done too.

I've used a pair of these on a speaker pair that were down on highs

http://diyaudioprojects.com/Drivers/40-1310/40-1310.htm

They are Fostex and sold under the Radio Shack name. Easy to
vampire in , and require no crossover change. Not too expensive
on the net. :)

Hi SEAWOLF97,

It is nice that You enjoy listening mentioned speakers, but I can guess that they are 'bemay', and have no idea how they 'cooperate' with the system drivers.

I used them on a 1 way Walsh driver and did not find them beamy at all.
Fostex has a very good rep.

over the long life of those "super tweeters", they were produced in various countries. I'd look for the Japan ones if going that route.

I would agree that if adding a tweeter, it would be desirable to roll off the high end of horn and reduce its harshness.

Thank you Gents!!

Alright 077 & Fostex, will see, if I can find a nice pair...and a good network idea as well

In the past I have used Tannoy ST-50 supertweeters on JBL S/2600 speakers. Currently using them on JBL S/3100 speakers in my office.

Just remember to check the polar plots on your add on tweeter and be prepared to be able to angle or tilt them towards the listening area. Probably nothing you can add will match the 2344 dispersion so the off axis is still going to be down relative to on axis. The 077 gets very beamy in the vertical axis and the 075 doesn't go high enough to matter and is way to beamy.

You could also consider the baby butt 2404H or 2404H-1 as a good top end tweeter with similar dispersion characteristics as the main mid-tweet 4430 horn. The 2404H might not reach up quite as high as the 2405/077 but it will be close. the 2405 or 2405H also will be a lot cheaper than the 077, but make sure any of the above tweeters have a good working original JBL diaphragm or have been rebuilt with a new or new in box JBL diaphragm, never use any aftermarket diaphragm except maybe the Radian units, all other aftermarket diaphragms are junk and will not have the extended or reasonably smooth response of the JBL diaphragm.
