...because they didn't expect, or want, owners to dig into these?

At one time, service centers had replacement foilcals available to them. Then the requests became overwhelming because it was easier to just tear the old foilcal off and replace it with a new one. Well guess what? Nothing lasts forever, and JBL finally made it mandatory to use a heat gun to get the original foilcal off instead. JBL did their part...

You can call Consumer and see what they have left:

I recently bought 2 pcs 4435 foilcals from JBL Germany.

So I would say there is hope although all vintage foilcals dissapeared from the misc. parts list earlier this year.
