I'm not a big fan of 4311B but I thought what the heck I'm a give another try. I can't get them to work, they sound lifeless. I want to try refinishing and see if that helps the sound. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I don't like 4311B's, but I love the 4313B's a lot more. Try laying on your side when reading this post.

I think I see the problem. By lying on my side I have detected that you have no drivers.

I would start there.

You have the classic sunburst finish. Very cool.

A little closer to the topic, I think in an attempt to improve the 4311B over the earlier versions they brought the mids' outputs down a bit in level. I remember thinking at the time when they were introduced that they sounded a bit dull and bass heavy.

I checked out a Kenrick sound comparison
between the 4313 w/ original an updated
networks I had a clear opinion on which sounded
cleaner with less filter obstruction. I'm not
using a 035ti however in my 42 ~ 56L cabinets
I do enjoy the 3112 over the n100, maybe look
into an updated network, try something different
since you already have a favorite. Maybe don't recreate
that, try a new sound for a specific media

You're right. Cherry sunburst would be better, so go with that instead.

How exactly were you able to compare them? On line?
Thank you,

If you are asking how did I compare the 4313B to the 4311b, I own them both and have owned a minimum of 15 pairs of the 2.

Goodbye sunburst! Has anyone had any luck with getting these badges off without damaging them to get to the crossovers.

Removed the "badges" on my 4310s, using reasonable heat from a heat gun and a tool made by bending the blade of a putty knife to 45 degree angle about 1" from its edge. Worked slowly under the metal, and LOTS of patience was needed. Take your time.

Then I removed the old glue with GoofOff (again, carefully so as to not damage the fronts). This allowed rolling them smooth with a small roller tool, but a clean piece of pipe or better yet the roller from a retired typewriter will do. Having the metal slightly curved helps when rolling it back in place, presuming that the previous actions were successful.

Elmers glue worked fine and was easy to clean up any oversqueeze. Once in place I held the badges down while glue cured with 1" by whatever width strips of wood. Put waxed paper between wood and metal, and used two pony clamps to hold them down.

I think there are repro labels available. If so, much time and stress can be avoided unless you are good at dealing with tedious procedures that dance closely with irrepairable damage.

If 4311 xovers are made like as in the 4310's you will need the heat gun to melt the wax that hold the caps in paper tubes. I would just bypass that and mount any components on a piece of masonite.

Have fun !

Anybody have a recommendation on the baffle board paint? Krylon black satin or what? I'm use to the blue baffle boards.

Those were the reason the previous owner went black after he sanded though a couple of corners. I've billed the substrate to meet the level of the veneer and tommorow night will use dry stains to reproduce the grain and pores.

Finger licking good,

they were on a YouTube kenrick video comparison
thet also exhibited a part two which closed the gap but I guess
the brilliance was over done sounded like feedback
and some instrument vs vocal stuff played in as well
i think it's just pedigree at some point as they both played
good but that piano on the untouched networks made
a difference

Heres tonights efforts to diminish the look of the 3 distressed corners. I'll seal all this and use dry stains to reproduce the small areas of grain muddy.

75879The finish is shiny, almost plastic looking because its wet. I'll let it cure for a couple of weeks and buff with rottenstone so it looks like an oiled finish. Then I'll mask off and do the backs and baffle board. I have to locate some black JBL cloth now.75875758767587775878

http://www.jblproservice.com/pdf/Studio%20Monitor%20Series/4311B.pdfI can not answer from experience, but I doubt there would be a real benefit to changing caps, placebo effect, certainly a strong possibility. Can you clean the original L-pads?

What is the clear finish you are using?

Using a high build cellulose lacquer. Very forgiving and easy to repair. I recall selling a beautiful pair of pristine 4313Bs to a great member on these boards. I had them on the counter shrink wrapping them when one of the cabinets fell on the floor and completely destroyed the corner. I refunded his money immediately via PayPal and he was sort of pissed but understanding. I was so impressed with his demeanor in the transaction that I went ahead and refinished and I truly believe if you were looking for the repair you couldn't find it. Wondering who it is? Let's just say that the purchaser on these boards made sure the polarity was correct on all the drivers and he is also the biggest fan of the L-100. LOL. Mr. Widget I still owe you a big favor so if you ever need anything you let me know! The 2 week period will allow the lacquer to truly clear so I can hand rub them to look like natural waxed finish.

Huntley has black cloth. He has a lot of different cloth, only the JBL Blue and JBL brown are supposed to be the Zilch/Saeman stuff sourced from the same place they got it. That said, his black doesn't look bad.

I have some of the JBL blue from him, and it's great. He sent a swatch of all his fabrics with the order, so it's easy to tell the weave/color differences between them.

Going to load up on the sanding primer to fill scratches and the surface differences from removing the folical glue and the woofer goop. I had good luck removing the badges by putting the heat gun on the putty knife letting it transfer the heat, thereby melting the glue.

FWIW - I sold my 4311b's last year and 4312's this month. (Coincidentally for the same price).

UNSCIENTIFIC OBSERVATIONS

Having done no work to them, the 12's seemed dull & lifeless while the 11b's were quite a bit more dynamic and forward.

yes, both were attached to same amp (but different times) and same neutral settings.
