Howdy,

Looks like somebody re foamed this speaker, and left some glue perhaps on the cone. Seller says he doesn't know if it was re foamed or not.

Suspicious?

I wonder if that little bit of glue will affect performance. Should I stay away? Is it hard to do an additional re foam if the re foam job was sub par?

I'm looking for some 4412's or 4410's if anybody has a pair in nice shape.

Just judging by the staining on the left it looks like a re-foam. I wound't necessarily stay away form them though. If cosmetics are important to you then you may want to look for another pair or some 128H-1s to replace those. If not, try them as they are and see if you like them. Re-foams aren't too difficult and Rick Cobb has them but JBL does not (AFAIK) have cone kits for this driver.

Good luck,

Warren

The gap is really uneven, too. I'd bet $1 they've been refoamed.

For all we know it could have been reconed (dustcap glueline looks neatly done) and refoamed later... but probably just refoamed (it's hard to DIY a good dustcap glueline w/o practice)... likely by a previous owner vs a shop (or a sloppy shop).

deduct points for the DIY refoam.
add points for unfrayed cloth, unbroken pins on grilles (as appropriate).

How does it sound??
Do you like it?
Is the price fair?

Howdy folks,

thanks for the replies. I was a bit sneaky about posting those ebay pics of somebody else's auction but not telling anybody they were on ebay. BUT, I forgot to even bid on them because of a chicken coup crisis.
Oh well.

BTW, a bit off topic. But that was a weird auction. They became lost on ebay during the last few hours of the auction. i.e. I couldn't find them by searching JBL 4412's, which is how I found them in the first place of course. I could still link to them because I had the auction number from asking the dude a couple questions, but they wouldn't show up on ebay's search results. Very strange. I've never seen that before and it makes me a little suspicious. They actually went for only $200 or so, (plus $290 shipping!!!) Maybe better I didn't go for those.

Still on the hunt for some main monitors for mixing. Not just listening. I have a pretty big room and a bunch of recording equipment, so that's my situation . . . .

Anyway, I've been finding lots of very interesting discussions here regarding 44xx and 43xx series speakers. This place is really great! Glad to have found this forum.
Thanks!

Looks like a crappy refoam. If you look at the cone, the foam is much thicker on the left side. I wouldn't be surprised if the voice coil rubs at low frequencies.
