While I'm having the woofers refoamed, I thought I would snap and share a few pics of what went into my modified L200 cabinets and the new modifications.

In the past I cut the cabinets for the longer L300 horns and 2405 slot tweeters and made new crossovers with Theta by-pass caps. Through much listening, coupled with the RTA, I came to the same conclusions as Nelson Pass, (but before Nelson did) that in the home setting, we want to make the horn a bit warmer and increased the caps to the mids accordingly. Also, my three 2420s (L/C/R) all have the early tangential diaphragms for their warmer sound. The tweeter circuit was also simplified a bit and I let it go a bit lower (0.5 mH) to compensate for the tangential diaphragms.

The bottoms of the cabinets were cut out and the cabinets raised with new bottoms for better speaker placement relative to the ear/floor bounce and more interior volume. In this go-round, I've increased the length of the two ports from ~7.25" to ~9.75" and they are now internally flared. The original ports were designed for the LE15 and not the 2235. In the past I had one closed, but that tuned the cabinets to low. This compensates for the difference and leaves a bit over 4" to the back of the cabinet.

Note the spray on rubber coating on the horns to deaden any ringing.

All 12 gauge wiring.

Lots of "tweaking" went into these.

Todd,

I'm anxious to know what you think of the end result. I have a pair of 4333s that I really like. They were upgraded to the 2235s by the last owner. I believe the cabinets have never been retuned, but are probably just under 30 Hertz. I should check that. I am using two Crown 5000HDs in the bi-amp mode. Crossovers were repaired by me. Replaced several caps in the 2205 sections. Anyway, I am using the Crown DSPs as the low to mid crossover. Fourth order L.R. on the lows and a second order B.W. staked on the mid/high section. This really cleaned up the mid range. In fact, I think these would compare well to any current offering today. I can't believe the clarity in the mid range and high end of these old beasts! The detail is incredible! Had to review my whole CD collection all over again. You can tell the older recordings are a bit limited on the low end, but most were very well done back in the day, especially the voices.

Regards

John

I put the woofers back in the cabinets today and put on "Brothers in Arms" then "Thriller" with no subs or surrounds (just the two speakers). The improvement in the bass is very notable! http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/thumbsup.gif

Before, with both ports open, it was a bit tubby/bloated. When I would block one port, it would tighten up, but I would loose some of the deeper bass, (still retaining the deepest bass). With the 2-1/2" extensions and both ports open, the bloat is gone and the deep bass much more prevelent and everything "down there" is tighter with better clarity. http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/banana.gif I should have done this years ago. http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/cuernos.gif
