Read it and weep. These should have found a home like Tom's, where they could have been faithfully restored.

Another pair bites the dust.

A shame... :(

He does a lot of buying/selling of 4343 related items. If memory serves me correctly, he sniped a set for about $1400 last year. They needed the usual surround replacement, etc....

He also sold a near mint set for about $3400.

I do a lot of buying/selling of vintage JBL stuff...... My 4343's ain't goin' nowhere! :D

The photo included in his eBay posting is a photo of a pair he "sold" on eBay on May 11 (eBay item # 3022189940). It's a shame he didn't try to sell these as complete units. If the buyer didn't follow through, surely others were interested. What is someone going to do with a pair of empty 4343 cabinets?

While I agree that it is a shame, I did the same thing with a pair of L-200s and doubled my money.

Luckily the L-200 is not regarded as highly in these parts as the 4343. If it were I guess I would be banished to the Bose Heritage Forum.:)

It doesn't appear any of the 4343 parts have moved yet. I also noticed the 2121's weren't part of the goodies being auctioned. Something tells me they would command the highest $$'s of everything being offered! :D

I took notice of that, too. Neither are the 2405's...

True, Mr. Widget, you can harvest the cabinets for possibly more than for the whole, but it seems unjust for the 43xx series, and higher-end L-series, too. And, it seems unwarranted when the cabinets are in good shape, and are just being emptied out. :(

The parts being offered may be from the set he picked up for $1400 last summer. He probably has $2000 into them with shipping and repair costs (they went coast-to-coast). The cab's may have been trashed?? :(

Come on guys, somebody out there should buy these 4343s before they are split up! I hear Alex will sell them, complete, for $1700. I believe he paid $1200. for these off of eBay and had some of the drivers re-foamed. If they're in good shape, they're worth the $1700.! I believe these are the 4343s I bid on last fall (?) and Alex beat me out. I'd go for them, exept I just finished rehabbing a pair, and I don't need 2 pairs!

Let's not let these get parted out!

"I don't need 2 pairs"

But, what ya using for rears...? :D

Man, I am with you - were I not completely, overwhelmingly sated in my Studio Monitor quest, I'd be all over these and work toward the 4344' rehab. Giskard told us how to get it done!

I have been in contact with the "alex..." guy Dave, and he said he would sell these 4343s in their cpmplete state if someone here in the JBL forum wants them. He said he sold the pair of 2121s, but will replace them if he gets a buyer.
Call Dave at 607-722-4391
...This could be your chance!

Very cool, Tom. Nice effort.

Feels like you're looking after one of your own, hey? Ha! :D

Hopefully, you have connected someone here ready to repeat your success - so get prepared for some pm's!! ;)

About 4 months ago I aquired a beat up pair of 843A Malibus about 5 miles from my home. One of the 414Z woofers was missing and one grill cloth ruined from a cat scratching on of the speakers. The cabinets were beat up.

I parted them out and sold the pieces for $1600 on ebay.

About a month later I found a mint pair of the identical 843a malibus in Delaware. I rented a truck, drove 6 hours one way, paid $600 for them, drove back and put them on ebay. Since these were like new and worked 100% I figured they'd generate some interest and sell high. I didn't want to part them out because they were so nice.

They didn't even meet my $1000 reserve! I relisted them and a week later someone put a bid in at the last minute for my reserve. They only sold for $1000!!!

I could have easily parted them out for $1600-$2000. This is why people part out old speakers. No one wants to bother with the big, hulking, expensive to ship speakers.

BigBusa...

I'm surely not as eBay proficient as you, but that market is constantly changing as you know - not all buyers are there all the time, so liquidity comparisons are relatively meaningless. Price ranges are only somewhat helpful, but the presence or absense of that one critical buyer completely changes valuation. Not selling something one week and then getting "poor" valuation the next implies very little about the item's potential worth.

My grab is that shipping large cabinets is discouraging to some, but for the vintage enthusiasts who can take-on cabinet refinishing work the results can be excellent. Alternatively, re-listing (and again...) has matched my sales with the right party, and parting-out is avoided.
