I'm thinking about trying the 2441's on the smith's horns, which I think are similar to Altec 288's which I also really like.

What do you guys think? They seem to be available from time to time in the $500 to $700 price range.

You may want to try a set of 2360 horns if you can get them locally. They allow for a great and simple 2-way system. The cut-off can be as low as 350HZ. I cut them circa 400Hz

What do you guys think? They seem to be available from time to time in the $500 to $700 price range.I really doubt you will hear a difference between a 2445 driver loaded with a new 2441 diaphragm and a fully charged 2441 loaded with a new 2441 diaphragm.

I would doubt most 2441s available will perform as new, you would need to have them fully serviced by someone with a gauss meter and ability to recharge the magnet, verify alignment, and replace the diaphragm.

You may prefer the 2441 diaphragm, I know I would, but I'm also wondering if you don't prefer the smaller H91 horn which has a sound more similar to your La Scalas?

I only use the LaSacalas for Home theater, maybe the occasional Comfortably Numb blast when my neighbors are out in their yard. Sonically my music tastes are more late night lounge style and in tune with the Altecs and the Lowthers. You can get 288's in Alnico or ferrite magnets, I've tried both and I like the Alnico version better, it seems a little smoother.

As far as the horn, I love this smiths horn, It images really well. I know Heather set this up as a three way but ultimately I think listening to these with out the horns is the way to go and get another bass bin with a JBL 15 inch bass driver and the smith horn with a 2441 might be a nice combination. Usually I like crossing over at 500Hz like on the Altec, but the Lowther is crossed over at 250HZ.

I'll probably pop for the 2441's to try them on Heather's L200s to see if I like them

May I suggest adding Be diaphragms in place of going to the 2441's. I have a very similar smith horn setup as yours and they sound awesome with Be. Charged coupled crossovers may be a nice thing to try too if your looking to tinker with them.

IMHO , I don't like the 2441 Running more than 10Khz....it sound Harsh to me, from 450-500 to 10-11Khz is sweet and realistic, after that you need a tweeter.

I think the diamond shape sorround help to reach 16Khz, but better for PRO application, not hi-fi ones.

if you see 2440 was running only till 10khz due to his "flat" sorround.

Actually, the walnut smith horns were built by Lansing forum member John W -
I had marveled at lots of other woodwork projects he built and posted here,
we PMed back and forth, and when he had some free time back in 2009...
