View Full Version : So I literally found these on the side of the road...JBL C38 content

Was driving home from work today, when out of the corner of my eye I saw the glimmer of an aluminum dust cap...

Pulled over and saw these sitting on the sidewalk with a sign that simply said "TRABAJAR"

I loaded them up, dropped one of em on my foot too, heavy son of a bitch.

I am actually more of a guitar amp guy and am always on the lookout for vintage steals and I had no idea what I was picking up, I just knew it had JBLs in it. But after doing some limited research, it seems that these are C38 Baron cabinets?? Can anybody confirm that this is correct based on my pics?

congratulations and welcome to Lansing Heritage! The cabinets look in decent condition considering they were probably manhandled to the curb. I take it there were no feet or legs? Might be interesting to go back and check out the residence and ask if there were any "piernas" left (total of 8). But you might just leave well enough alone if anyone thought they shouldn't have been put out there. wonder if it was a clean out of a house or garage?

Anyway, read up on the cabinets and their finish before embarking on any cleaning or refinishing. They are great looking MCM type looks, so may be popular in the SF / Silicon Valley area to the right people. Be careful if you consider playing guitar through them! Looks like they are the C38 with the 002 load of JBL D130 and 075 bullet tweeter.

Oh, if there's no legs, these make decent subs for them looks wise, in some cases you may have to fabricate the threaded insert:

The speakers look to be in really good condition and the interior of the cabs are pretty clean and pristine. Still havent figured out how to remove the grill cloth. It seems like it should slide out from the bottom but havent figure it out yet.

The bad news:

On both cabs, there is damage to the bottom where one of the legs should screw in. Also the cabinets themselves will need a bit more TLC than I anticipated:

I had a pair of these last year.

the grille cloth is mounted to a thin board that slips out of the slot on the bottom front . speakers have to be laying on their backs to do this move.

mine also had the damaged bottom where the particle board could not maintain the feet screws.
I bought some 1 inch plywood to size, then screw & glue to the bottoms .. providing a better surface to attach to , but sold the speakers as-is before doing that. They are now in Korea being completely refurbed.

good money
already have a 20 to 2 ratio of speakers to ears (as noted by the wif)

too big . just bought because of good package deal

BUT , I could have easily lived with them if circumstances were different.

can anybody recommend a good, affordable receiver to pair with these bad boys? new or vintage. affordable = <$500

After doing some more reading, seems like you probably wanna go with a receiver fairly low in power, for risk of blowing the D130s, i.e. <50W

Can anybody confirm that?

grumpy
08-23-2016, 04:56 PM
Figure on getting 1/2 rated power unless you're using amps with output transformer taps intended for 16 ohms.

In the end, not a big deal as even 25W would drive you from the room (or should).

Bigger amps don't damage speakers, operators do (including accidents that even a lower powered amp might not prevent). Cranking a receiver with the loudness switch on, trying to get more bass than the design was intended for, is a good way to take out old drivers.

I'd look for something quiet, personally. Picking a receiver or amp for someone else is like picking their girlfriend...
I'll leave that dubious recommendation to someone else :)

BS!

I've run my D130s for over fifty-years, most recently with a 200 watt-per-channel Crown CD300A-II. They love clean power and, to my mind, sounded better with the DC300A-II than with the smaller D150A-II.

When I first got them I blew an 075 with a crappy Kenwood receiver. At that time JBL had a lifetime warranty and I sent the driver back for repair and got it back with a nice note suggesting I might have my receiver checked for "high-frequency oscillation". I just sold the Kenwood and replaced it with a Mac C20 and a Fisher SA1000 amp. I believe the damage done was from too little power and too much sound pressure (volume). :dont-know:

Pics still don't work, or the links to the pics are blocked or locked or don't work.

As for a good receiver, I'd suggest the Marantz 2230 or 2250 or 2270 (in good working condition, preferably recapped by someone competent and experienced). Those receivers have enough power without being super expensive, and have a mellow tubelike sound signature. A good tube amp would also be a good start, like a dynaco ST70 or much more expensive Marantz 8B or McIntosh tube amp. There's a bunch of people on AudioKarma.org who live in the SF Bay area, if you join and become a subscriber (for $25) you have access to Barter Town where there are sales listings or you could post a wanted to buy WTB ad. Same here for Lansing Heritage Marketplace except its free!

"Choose an amplifier or receiver that’s as powerful (within reason) and as excellent as you can afford; at rational listening levels, “too much” available power will never compromise a speaker’s sound, but too little power definitely can."

interesting and somewhat counter intuitive. I guess my problem is I dont have a baseline. Like what is considered a cheap ass receiver? What is middle of the road? What is the most amazeballs receiver EVAR?

audiomagnate
08-28-2016, 04:42 AM
The cheapest ass receivers are black face AV receivers from Goodwill. They sound fine, have plenty of power to drive your very sensitive speakers and they're recent enough that you don't have to worry about parts failing. You spent zero on the speakers so that might be a good match. Get one with a phono input if you want to play records.
