sup guys, i found a 4425 online for $80 dollars...
the thing is, its pretty rough and frankensteined..

no grills and missing OE woofer

do you guys have any recommendations on how to clean adhesive/glue on the veneer?
I ripped the carpet off and it looks like the veneer is still clean!!!!!!!!!!!!!
but who does that!? carpet on veneer... anyways...
i have lots of work to do...plus im looking for a set of 2214H, im definitely not using the pyle blue:crying:

Great find!

Someone with a lot more wood and veneer know-how should chime in soon. Just don't be in a hurry to try any old solvent.

Can you get a clue as to what kind of adhesive it is? If you've exposed it, is is pliable and gooey and rolls up like boogers? Adding some heat from a hair dryer or heat gun might soften it enough to scrape away easily with a credit card or drywall knife.

At all costs however, avoid water soaking in through the seams. Below the veneer is late 1970's or early 80's MDF.

thanks, i actually tried acetone, it works but the acetone dries quick, and as soon as it dries it goes back to the sticky stuff..
its not the booger looking glue...stuff is sticky...like a contact cement...

i wonder if paint stripper from lowes will work without harming the veneer..

MEK is more powerful than acetone and dries much slower. It will definitely wreck the black paint like paint stripper.

Fingernail polish remover used to made from MEK.

Can you even get MEK in Cal?

Barry.

some Wuerth glue/sticker removal?

then you can light sand and use back Danish oil.

MEK is no longer sold in certain parts of California (Air Resources board) although I am aware that some towns near the coast might have some at marine outlets. I've found some at my local HazWaste recycling centers (in Orange County) where they allow people to take used materials instead of dumping them.

As for the right solvent, stripper might work, as MEK, and maybe something like the Weurth mentioned or Goo Gone. The main thing is patience, using a suitable scraper when the glue is softened, and a well, well, ventilated area completely free of any ignition source - no working in a garage or enclosed space - very hazardous.

ARMED, you have a really good find there, congrats. You've been Hoovering all the JBL's in the San Diego area!! Did these come with grilles?

You're going to get overwhelmed with all the different JBL projects, not to mention the hits your wallet is going to take.

Hi Armed ,

I'd use a scraper ,then use acetone to clean up the remaining glue .

$80.00 is a good deal. And you did a great job stripping the cabinets. I wonder if there's any alternative to a 2214h. A woofer you can fit, has a decent sound, and will allow you some time until you find a good set of 2214h...

I was thinking 128 from jubals, some guy I know selling it for cheap...ill even slap a set of d131 on there if I find a good deal

I know they have different specs...but ill just put whatever I can get at the moment...

All you have to do is ask - there are 2214H's in storage in a number of places. I know where there's a few...ready to be refoamed.

Looking very nice, although it looks like the stain has bleached or leached out a bit. Some might like it lighter, otherwise, you could stain or oil it again for the OEM look.

Good job!

My only beef is those woofers; hard to unsee them. Good luck in your hunt for 2214s

I must say, the glaring downside to dirt cheap vintage finds is usually the cost of bringing them up to snuff. That said, to most of us it's worth it.

Exactly! It's like you feel you must prevail upon the gods to continue the trend or you must undo their gift.

I found a pair of 4425's on Craigslist a while back. One had a grill and one didn't. I sent the one grill to Huntley Audio in Illinois to be duplicated. The copy he made is indistinguishable from the original. The 4425 grills he now sells are clones of the original 4425 grill that I sent him. If you want a pair of grills that are exactly like originals, give Huntley Audio a call, or check out his eBay page.

I can't find his email address at this moment, however you can contact him through his eBay store. Check out this eBay ad. These are the grills he made from copying my original 4425 grill.

Sorry, in the middle of an "emergency" interior house repaint (wife announced on Sept. 20 that we'll host grandson's 2 year birthday party for 20-25 on Oct. 2), so everything has been boxed up and stored or can't access till October 7 - gotta have time to recover and re-find everything.

We'll fix him up.

Armed,

This restoration came out very nice, congrats! ( which reminds me that I should repaint my 2344 horn bells sometime )

Did you ever finish this project ? ( iow, did you get the proper woofers located & loaded ?)

How do they sound ?
