I've recently aquired a pair of JBL's that have 4503AWX cabinets. Am I right in assuming these are 4333's?

The cabinets require some serious restoration as the veneer is in fairly poor condition and I am missing grills and the foil scale indicator for the front L pads.
Is it possible to get these folis anywhere and hoe do I make up the new grills.

Do you mean JBL's or the Victorian fireplace & overmantle?

JBL's are:
2 Nr L200's LE15b, LE85,
1 Nr 4505 2215, 4220 2402
2 Nr 4503 Not checked 15" yet, 4220, 4205

As for pics, I don't have a website to upload them to and I can't see any other way to do it!

If the cabinet came loaded with 2405 tweeters and a 3133 or 3133a crossover - then you have a set of 4333 (a) speakers . No 2405 tweeter, along with the 3131 or 3131a crossover and you have 4331 speakers .

Woofers are likely 2231a (alnicos). 2231H ( ferrites ) would indicate the 4333B/WX model in the 4503B-3/WX ( or 4503 BWX-3 ) enclosure .

OK here's the 1st try at uploading a pic. I'll take some detailed ones of the 4333's later and upload if this works http://audioheritage.csdco.com/vbulletin/images/smilies/smile.gif

Your walls are a nice compliment to the blue color of the JBL speakers. The fire place is a classic. and would fetch a high price in New York.

Or is it better to re-veneer?

Also does anyone know where I can get replacement foilcals from?

Hello Andywin

I've seen those on gear on line.

The centre speaker has also been seen before? I have a pair of such with S8 spec.

I'm am also in UK so yours is a very rare sight!

Your 4333 sound fun. I assume you are ging to turn the horn and slot round to the correct orintation to use the standing up?

The folical 'may' be available from forum members but the correct grille cloth is almost impossible to find. You can get the blue matched at a autopaint factor if needed. There is a good thread on restoring veneer on this forum, try the search. If beyond repair then re veneer is beyond my knowledge.

Yes I will turn the 4205's around, but I intend to use them upside down stacked on top of the L200's and power the 200's with a pair of telefunken V69 amps and the 4333's and 4505 with the klangfilm KL-V408a's you can just see in the background. If 5 channel audio improves to provide less artificial souning recordings I may then use the L200's as rear channel speakers

Is the 4505 the same spec as yours?... I've attached a pic with the grill off

I noticed what looks to be an Pio. RT707/701 in one of the pic's, is that any good?, I've got one collecting dust and it is 100% functional.

Yes it is a RT707, It's not bad at all. I use it for a number of 4 track pre recorded tapes that I have.
I also have a telefunken M10... As good if not better then a Studer C37 and an Ampec PR-10 4 track that requires a new belt.... A seemingly hopeless quest.

Not shown for vinyl replay are: EMT 930ST, EMT 938, Garrard 401 and the silver case on top of the 4505 is a Westrex garrard 301 (super rare)

The veneer looks restorable, with a little TLC you can turn them around!

Thanks to all for the advive and encouragement on the cabinets :)

Is there any hope of locating new or old foilcals? and where can I source the brown JBL cloth (I intend to match the fronts to the L200's)

I need to know the compression driver used on the mid on your centre speaker. It would be 1 inch throat or 375 2 inch type, mine is 375 and this speaker may be from the same batch as mine if it is 375 driver.

Lots of holy grail items, in fact you appear to have them all:)

I would expect your veener to restore after looking at the photos.

Unfortunately no 375 to be found. :( I reached through the port and the throat of the horn is definitely 1" so it's safe to assume its a 2420. It does sound good though. I actually prefer its 2215 to the 2231's in the 4333's and I find the 4202 tweeter smoother than the 4205's. Maybe it'sthe crossovers (LX5 & N7000). Cabinet construction qualityvis better than the 4333,s too. What horn do your pair use?

Earl, well spotted!
My copy of wireless world from May 1957 advertises the K10A ( for home use)at £50 inclusive of crossover but without cabinet. That was an enormous sum of money in 1957.
For an 18" speaker, the crossover is higher than I expected at 1,700Kcs. Must be to do with the length of the horns. It was my bargain of the century as I only paid £1 including crossover :D The guy I bought it from only had one that a friend had given him to use with his guitar but it just gathered dust in his garage. His mate had another six but he has lost contact with him :(
Which came first...The Altec 604, BTH K10A or the version Parmeko marketed (can't remember the model) although I think that was a 12"

My use HL 91 or 93. Can't remember exactly which but a short horn with lens as per your centre. All your speakers should sound good, I 'm sure there are some hours of tweaking ahead to bring the 4333 up to spec.
