View Full Version : 2440 with a 075 compared to a 2441?

I'm gathering parts for a Hartsfield build, and I was wondering if I should go with a three way 130A 2440 075, or two way 130a 2441? From what I have read, I think I'm going to stick with aluminum diaphragms and alnico drivers. I'm not sure if the larger 2445 style driver will fit anyway.

OK, here's a non-scientific, 30+ years personal experience with that horn + UHF, for what it's worth. The best I ever heard it sound is tri-amped with 375 (2440) crossing at 7000 Hz, 12db/octave. Best with 077 but 075 is always "fun." I recently went through that whole exercise AGAIN in passive configuration with new 2441 diaphragms. Bottom line: it works "OK" as a two-way but comes to life with the 077 added. You MUST have the correct crossover to optimize smoothness through the region. I use the 3155 and cannot improve it. Not bad. GT, I assume. So, in any case, to my (old) ears, a 3-way sounds better - but I am very sensitive to the upper register. Too many years in the woodshed practising trumpet. If you are seriously interested in hi fi, a tri-amp really "does it" for that old gear but certainly complicates the whole deal. There are a lot of good threads here in the data base by people who have been through this. Good luck! Mike

I thought I could get away without the added expense of a three way system by using a 2441, but from doing a lot of reading here I still need a tweeter. The spec sheet on a 2441 says it goes to 18,000 HZ and the 075 only goes to 15,000 HZ, but you can't listen to a spec sheet.

You should go with 2441 for sure! The 2445 are also very good!
the difference between the 2440 and 2441 is the gauss level.

might also have something to do with the diaphragm :)

Hi
And diaphragm suspensions are different so 2441 can produce frequency over 10kHz....

So if the crossover is at 7000 hz or so, does it matter that the midrange can produce frequencies higher than that? Would the midrange and the tweeter play simultaneously?

So ... the quick answers are: it depends (a lot on your crossover), and I hope so.

I'm eating dinner, so either someone else can chime in
or you can ponder while I finish eating.

I'll just search for 2441 drivers and some sort of tweeter like an 075 or 076. I'm a long way from crossovers, and haven't even done any research on them yet.

At least you're tolerant of my humor (as it is).

Long answer (covers both questions):

Crossovers allow -some- overlap, so I would expect an audible and measurable difference in switching from a 2440/375 to a 2441. You might like it, you might not. The overlap can be lessened in a number of ways, but using a steeper crossover is one way (each driver steps on its neighbor's toes a bit less the further in frequency you move away from the nominal crossover freq).

If the 2440/1 was run wide open (no crossover section rolling off the mid's highs intentionally), and the tweeter added with perhaps just a series cap, you would be counting on the mid's natural roll off with the tweeter filling in where the mid dropped off. As the 2440 and 2441 don't roll off in the same way, you would experience a more dramatic change in sound (vs using a band pass filter as a normal 3-way crossover would include) between the two mid drivers.

The cleanest/most expedient way to put such a system together is to use what the factory did (drivers and crossovers).

Hi!

I'm using K145/2440 harstfield lens/2405.

woofer box is 8 cu ft, ported tuned to 35Hz

3 way crossed at 500Hz/9.5K Hz

So how would a 2482 work with a pair of 075 tweeters in a Hartsfield? I bought a pair of 2441's but the throats are cracked. The seller also has some 2482's. The 2482's works from 300 HZ to 6000HZ, I'm wondering if the 075 can take over after that?

075's will make the jump.

I have NOS throats for the 2441's.

I'f I stick with the 2441's with the broken throat I will contact you. I'm looking for someone local who can re-gauss magnets, and it looks like I will have to do that to change the throats.

Right-O. Will be glad to help if I can. That stuff's just taking up space on a shelf. :)
