It looks like time has evolved around to the last set of speakers I will be able to build. I'd like to go out and get a pair of M2's but that's not going to happen, that being said I have just about gathered all of the transducers and drivers for a 4351 build. Can't get the 4355's into my space but the verticle 4351's are another story. I have a pair of 2435's coming and another pair on order, 2405's will be here Tuesday and the 2202's will be coming up from Vegas. I have the 2445's and horns here (darn heavy) and the 4355 foilcals from Italy. Cardboard ports are coming from Canada. Network is coming. It's time to get with the program and start on the cabs. Stay tuned all you are on the edge of your chairs with rapt attention for future episodes and feel free to comment on the build the way you think it should be done for until the wood is cut and mitered I am open to all input. :blah:

I got these in the mail today from Italy. I compared them to my 4345 foilcals from sign-shop. They are pretty nice, I don't know if they are supposed to be white instead of silver but everything else is pretty good. They just need to be transferred to a thin piece of aluminum. I asked him to make me a pair with 4351 in the lettering and he said he could. Sorry about the poor pic quality, I sold my Canon stuff to get audio stuff. :crying:

I got the 2202's today and the 2405's a few days ago, they look nice both from reputable audio perverts and I expect all my 2235's here by the end of the month, plus I have the 2445J's with the horns and I also got a good deal on a pair of lenses they are marked L91 instead of the 2308 but WTH they are the same thing. Am I in the upper echelon of audio wonderfulness or what?

Waiting to go to Portland to pick up my son from his honeymoon so I decided to make the port tubes. I really don't think it makes a hill of beans that they are angled but went ahead anyway. It may make a diff. on the 4355's but I don't think it does on these. I hot glued them together and will clean up the seams after it sets up a bit.

Oh no it does Larry!
If they were straight, you would not have been able to have long enough! Even on the 4351.
Its with the length that you tune up the speaker...

i'm not sure if hot glue will be strong enough.

I would apply around construction glue. LP glue. You'll find it at Home Depot.

Aesthetically, I like the ocarina-look of the one on the left.

I think (a dangerous pastime, I know) I'd avoid putting a port at an obvious peak/null node
in-cabinet, which this probably does when the doghouse is considered.

Well, it's too late now I had the guys in Italy make foilcals with 4351 on them, I hope I can sleep tonight. :lol_fit:On second thought those were so cheap I can probably have them make another pair.

Here's where we are today. I cut the ports out and rabbitted the back of them out 3/16x1/4 so the cardboard tubes would recess into the hole. Then I marked and drilled the HF driver holes, those puppies are REALLY heavy I am going to give some thought on how to support them. I could make a metal frame to attach to the driver bolt holes but that still puts a lot of weight at the rear. :dont-know:

Todays highlights. I was going to use clear fir but I would have had to taken a second out on my house so I used kiln dried 2x4 that I cut down a 1/2 inch instead so I have a 3in. kick. I may cover it with a 1x4 of clear fir, MUCH cheaper! As usual I glued the crap out of them.
I also drilled the holes for the 2405's. Next I am going to install inserts for the speaker clamps, I hate those T nuts that JBL used so I have some 1/4x20 inserts and will cut the bolts down so they are not so long after that I believe I will be ready for assembly.

Today I drilled the holes for the speaker tabs and installed the inserts and cut out the last two ports. The inserts are WAYYYYY above what JBL used. They do not supports anything anyway the holes are cut so close that the speakers fit snug and the speaker tabs are only to keep them from falling forward. I also covered the 2x4 supports with some 3/4 clear fir. I'm going to assemble on thur. if everything goes well.

Don't try to assemble one of these by yourself. I looked at the panels and said "I can do this" Well, I did but it was a chore. I waited on the second one until my son came over and we had that thing together in nothing flat. now onto bracing, making the back, etc.

Mine are even taller than yours, big & ugly, but I never cared for the horizontal arrangements of 15” woofers in larger JBL monitors, be it 4350, Everest or whatever.
I stacked the 2235’s in vertical alignment with separate 5 cu. ft. enclosures for each, used ¾” birch plywood and ¾” particle board glued and screwed resulting in 1 ½” thick sidewalls, zero resonance, feels like concrete, but these are heavy as hell.

Here is how I solved the vhf mounting problem. I could have made a metal bracket and secured it too the top of the cabs but I did not like that, if left a great deal of weight at the rear of the driver unsupported so I made a small fir bracket and glued it to the support of the bottom of the dog house. I have some 1x3's to install on the sides and the rear and that will be the end of that. I can't install the ones on the back until I get the network and see how wide they need to be.

My wife is of the opinion that I am too ugly to be featured on the Internet, so here are the dimensions;

36” wide (left to right)

I was thinking of doing same with my L300 labels I got from him, but I can't come up with a way to cut the perfect 5/8 inch diameter holes perfectly spaced 2 and 1/4 inches apart. Years ago I used to use a chassis punch die to put holes in thicker aluminum, but I'm stumped on doing it with scissor thin sheets. Any ideas? Thanks.

Grills are done, they are the hardest part of the build. 6 hours to make them. I didn't make them in an upper or lower although they do look better that way. I did them like my 4345's. This isn't a JBL clone so I decided to take some license, notice the 2202 is not lined up with the upper 2235 although in retrospect I do believe it looks better that way but these are going to look fine like they are. Almost done this is a typical back, I just need to install the inserts around the edge. I'll do that tomorrow time to start soldering and wiring the L pads.

That will be crappy without any frequency divider...
I can't wait to see the final product!

I have to look at the manual and see how they hook up before I jump on them.

With the 5234A or 5235? It's pretty easy. Do you have the right cards?

without freq divider, you will have some sound but nothing compare with the FD. The 2202 don't move much with the FD...

send me an email if you have any question...

So far today the inserts are all installed and the tweets are installed. notice on my foilcal the 4351 lettering. and I was almost ready to pop for the sign-shop knobs but saw this auction on Epay for two pair from Russia for only twenty some odd dollars, I figured WTH I can chance it once and according to Epay they are on the way by Yak or whatever mode of transportation they have there.

Well, it looks like it's thumbs down for this weekend, It looks like I only ordered enough speaker mounting tabs for one speaker or I forgot where I put the others it's been so long, anyway I can't find them, I'll have to order 12 more to finish up. :crying: :crying: :banghead: My phone does not take pics like my Canon 50D

Duhhh, that idea never came to me. I'll probably have them Monday or tue. I was going to use the foam crap that comes with the speaker mounting kit but decided to buy some cork and make rings for all the speakers to mount on and I also lined the back of the rear panel to seal it from the cab.

They sound awesome also. I only need a little volume on these, I can't imagine what they would sound like turned up. I'll have to wait until nobody is home and I have a little of the grape.

So, how they sound compared to the 4345 you had? Now it seems you are one of the first with a real comparison.

to me, the mid high of a 4350-55 is superior to 4343-4345.... and the low end? I never hear a 2245h...

two 2235h should sound more quick, with more impact, more precise, but less "thunderstorm" low end.

It's the picture of the Cone holders are not simmetric?
Great job indeed, the first 43...56 :);)

They sound better than my 4345's but I did not have them bi-amped so it's probably not a fair judgment. They highs are clearer and there is larger bass. I'm going to listen to some of my classical this weekend and try and see what the difference is. I have the Red Violin and Yo-Yo Ma plays Ennio Morricone. That will give me some upper register and very good bass. I remember the 4345's were outstanding with those two recordings.

I thought I laid out the fasteners pretty well but once the speakers are mounted it shows. I'll get over it.

Nothing better than listening in a empty house. Let us know which one of the decorative plates falls off the wall first.:D.

I had 4345 and now 4350. The 4345 have better imaging and the Drivers seem to integrate better. But the 4350 has better scale and slam.

I just finished listening to the Yo-Yo Ma album. The highs and the mids are much better than I remember on my 4345's but the bass was not as hard hitting but still very good. I'm now listening to 'the Very Best of Grappelli and Menuhn'

coming up Led Zep II re-mastered and Crucial Slide guitar Blues and Buddy Guy. This is a tough call not being able to A and B the speakers but over all I have to give it to the New pair.

After many hours of listening and contemplating I definitely have to give it to the 4351's. The LZ was really outstanding, I did get some really good bass from the sound track "The Red Violin" that was the equal of what I remember from the 4345's but the mids and highs were much superior IMHO and everybody in my house said they sounded better. I still haven't been able to get everybody out for a real definitive test yet but soon. I have to deal with my wife who when she came home after I got my 4345's together started in on me about how loud they were and my granddaughter and kids. I am still hampered by not bi-amping the 4345's and not having the room to really A/B them but all in all I am very happy I built them. I don't know how much better the M2's and the 66000 series can possibly be.

The 4355's are easier to build but still no small chore make no mistake they are big if you don't have room for them in their original configuration you better do as I did and they are bi-amp only.

The L-pad knobs that I ordered from Russia arrived today, the only difference from the ones that Sign-shop sells is that they have a glossy finish instead of satin. Saved myself a bunch of money there.

Now that I have listened to these 4355 clones for a few weeks to everything from classical to blues I have to admit they sound a lot better than my 4345's. More clarity, others would say louder, that's true but it's the clarity that makes me happy. The mids and highs are much more defined than before. Not that I didn't like the 4345's, I did but I like these better. I don't know how much not having my 4345's bi amped contributes to this but it's too late to find out now.

Hi quindecima,

Talking about 4345 vs 4355, I would suggest to try to apply 2450 (sl diaphragm) with 2311 horn and 2308 lenses on 4345 box, and then to compare them. From my opinion in 4345, 2420&2307 is the "weakest " elements.
