New poster here, tried the AVS forums...no response, thought I'd try here.

First of all, so sorry to hear about Greg, and now Jerry. Very sad news indeed. Grab that Legacy stuff while you can, I guess.

My first JBL's were L88's, powered by a JBL SA660 integrated amp. I bought these together in 1969 (while in high school) and they rocked! JBL's made it into our cars as a bunch of us cut holes in the rear deck and mounted 2-D208's and an 075, all powered by a Motorola 8 Track tape deck with a whopping 3.5 watts per channel. Those were the glory days.

Fast-forward to 2016, old-school 7.2 system consisting of 7 JBL 4312 Control Monitors and 2 SVS SB2000 subs (in my non-dedicated living room). I'm expanding to 7.2.4 Atmos/DTS:X with a Denon AVR-X6200W AVR and Emotiva XPA-3 for LCR and need some advice for JBL Atmos speakers to try and get as close as possible to timbre match the 4312's.

Here's what I've come up with:

JBL Control 28-1 http://www.jblpro.com/www/products/i...s/control-28-1 (http://www.jblpro.com/www/products/installed-sound/control-contractor-series/control-28-1)
JBL 8320 Compact Cinema http://www.jblpro.com/www/products/c...d-systems/8320 (http://www.jblpro.com/www/products/cinema-market/surround-systems/8320)
JBL SCS 8 Concentric http://www.jblpro.com/www/products/c...speakers/scs-8 (http://www.jblpro.com/www/products/cinema-market/scs-spatially-cued-surround-loudspeakers/scs-8)

Control 28-1:
8” woofer with woven fiberglass cone (should be OK)
1” PEI diaphragm horn-loaded tweeter with fluid cooling (worried about this-both PEI and horn-loaded)
Built-in InvisiBallŪ mounting hardware, plus available U-bracket (great for ceiling mounting)
Wide 100° x 100° coverage (great for Atmos/DTS:X)
120 Watt power handling (240 Watt program) in direct 8Ω setting (works with the Denon)
Frequency response of 62 Hz – 16 kHz (+/- 3 dB)
91 dB sensitivity (same as 4312's)
Indoor/Outdoor speaker (well...OK, but not necessary)
Made in China

8320 Compact Cinema:
8” long-throw woofer (should be OK)
1” soft-dome tweeter-horn loaded (might be better than PEI, but still horn-loaded)
Frequency response of 65 Hz to 18 kHz (+/- 3dB)
91 dB sensitivity (same as 4312's)
High Power Handling Capability: 150 watts continuous pink noise (OK with Denon)
JBL QuickMount™, OmnimountŪ or APC Multimount brackets (need Omni's to mount from ceiling..$$$)
Wide 100°h x 90°v coverage (OK here too for Atmos/DTS:X)
Made in China

SCS 8 Coax:
250 Watt power handling-average continuous pink noise (more than enough!)
8" woofer with Kevlar-reinforced cone and 2" voice coil (very good)
1" exit compression driver polymer diaphragm (no horn, uses speaker cone)
Frequency response 90 Hz – 20 kHz (+/- 3dB)
94 dB sensitivity (+3 dB on the 4312's)
Consistent 120° x 120° broadband pattern control (EXCELLENT for Atmos)
Two M10 points for included U-bracket. (ready to mount)
Made in ????? (not sure, Mexico??)

I'm leaning towards the SCS 8's, pricey, but will be all the overheads I'll ever need. I'm really worried about the horns in the other 2. All have 8" woofers which is something I want.

Any advice...or other options I haven't thought of? TIA

I'd go with the SCS as well. Save the Control 28s for the deck.

As far as voicing akin to the 4312s I couldn't tell you but I think you're on the right track.

Good luck,

Warren

You might look at the control 328C in ceiling (basically the same as the SCS) speakers if you are willing to go that route. I have the 321's (same CD) and they are quite amazing as fill from the ceiling for Atmos processing.:)

Yeah, don't really want to use the Control's. The SCS-8's will definitely do the job. Thanks for the input.

I can't go in-ceiling, as the ceiling is vaulted and the attic "space" is sealed and full of insulation fill with no access. Good thought though.

FYI: I ordered the JBL SCS-8's...no sense in messing around!
