Hi all,
I'm thinking about changing the diaphragms of my JBL LE85A, they are auite old and not up to shape. Does anyone have experience of radian vs JBL? What kind of difference should I expect between the two? I can get both over here, but no chance to listen to them first,

Thanks for your help!

Hi Scorpio,

I'd recommend buying JBL original diaphragms.

Aluminum or Titanium, your choice. Your choice should be somewhat driven by the other components in your system - including whatever passive or electronic crossover you may be using .

I own a bunch of Radian aluminum diaphragms . In my opinion they are quite "all right" - but that's the best I can say . The worst ( or most critical ) I'll say about them - is that they always appear to sound "over-damped", to my ears. They share this attribute with the Altec 908 diaphragm which also has a similar mechanical construction . I would never use an Altec 908 or 808 at home when I could listen to the 802 or 902 . For me, the compliance of a diaphragms suspension is also an issue for consideration - as I believe it's a significant contributor to the overall "dynamics" of the sound . The challenge is ; a person needs to own all of the different types of diaphragms to make an informed decision .

It's a real gamble or "shot in the dark", whether or not this "overdamped" signature will work for you and your listening tastes .

Though "raw-circuit" JBL diaphragms sound "under-damped" to my ears - all the passive JBL circuits that I've built up & listened to ( from JBLs' tech sheets ) take care of this by adding some circuit dampening.

It's a much easier to "add" circuit dampening - than to somehow "release" an over-damped circuit .

So, Buy - JBL .

I've got a 360 Modena with a blown head gasket (too much rpm's) and want to know if anyone thinks the 4banger I got from a 89' Yugo would be a good replacement? They both run on gas.;)

You can drop in a 6 cyl from a 51 Nash......BUT back to diaphrams...I would stick with original JBL.

I tried a radian replacement aluminum diaphragm for my 2441,s and its OK, but you will not have as much punch in the drivers operating range! Some consider this to be a smoother sound than the JBL, I say IT IS different, but BETTER, I dont think so!

If you want your drivers to operate and sound like JBL, then use JBL parts!
