What speaker (mono?) did Robert Fine use in the Mercury Recording truck? There is a wonderful article about his truck here: http://www.preservationsound.com/?p=7534

They mention "a single Altec monitor speaker and a McIntosh amplifier."

I have recently discovered all the Mercury Living Presence recordings and am esp. loving the mono recordings. I'm curious about how he monitored in the "near field."

I imagine the trucks mono monitoring was done via a compact W.E. ( Altec ) 755a ( full-range 8" ) .

Or a 756 ( full-range 10" ) or 728b ( full-range 12" ) .

Any of the Altec variants ( of these W.E. speakers ) would suffice for quality monitoring ( & will cost anyone an arm & leg on eBay ) .

Believe that's the WE cabinet hanging on the upper left there above the reels.

Thank you! Very interesting. I wonder if that cabinet has a horn tweeter too. It looks like there are two holes. I love that Western Electric link.

What full range speaker would you recommend to give me the nearest reproduction of what Mr. Fine was listening to that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?

Sorry, I'm not familiar enough with that world to make any recommendations.
