JBL 2240 vs 2245 question

I have both a JBL 2240 and a 2245 that I am planning to use for sub-woofers. I have been told and have read several posts that claim they both have the same frame and motor assemblies. If this is in fact true I’m thinking of re-coning the 2240 with the same type of cone assembly that is in the 2245. I know that both of these original re-cones are on the endangered species list, but just what is/was the difference between a 2240 and a 2245 cone assembly? Or is the difference between the two more than just the cone assembly? Thanks.

At the very least, the surround is foam on the 2245, and the cone is treated with aquaplas.
Both make it more suitable for home subwoofer use (vs sound reinforcement).

The hard parts are interchangeable.

hey tjm001. the 2245h will have a little more aquaplas treated on the cone compared to the 2240. my personal taste I like the 2245h

No aquaplas on the 2240 at all. Our very own Edgewound has actual equivalent 2245 kits. Check ebay. Also a quick search for "2240 vs. 2241 vs. 2245" will bring up a good discussion.

jbl oem kits on the 2240 had aquaplas about 1/3 of the cone

Sometimes the thicker pulp in areas on the back can look like a coating or black aquaplas, but it would be interesting to see such an example, as it is not specified by JBL nor have I (yet) seen an aquaplas coated 2240 cone (front or back). :dont-know:

Tom if you have the money recone both 2240/ 2245 . One at a time place the driver inside the cabinet see what ya get at low medium and high volume. See and hear which jbl low frequency drivers sound good to your ears . whichever you choose will be a great choice

What aftermarket recone kit could you advise me to buy to recone a JBL 2245H ?

According your simulation it appears that the frequency response of the two speakers are quite similar in the low frequency .Both have 40Hz at -6db in a 250l box .
But what is the feeling when one compare the two listening in the low frequency .
I have two 2240h frame .Would it be better to recone them with 2240 recone kit or 2245h recone kit in order to get the best low frequency ?

The process to build the kit takes a few days, as it's a pretty tedious process to match the moving mass of the engineering standard: Spray aquaplas material, let dry, weigh cone, spray again, dry again, weigh again...until within 2 grams of the engineering spec. Price is $275.00.

The first kit was shipped to a customer in Finland that reported the cosmetics and sound were very accurate compared to the factory unit.

I'm confident that all other reconers ( offering their aftermarket kits ) really only work under the principal of Caveat Emptor (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caveat_emptor).

The casual buyer who doesn't know about ( let alone understand TS Parameters ) is their perfect unsuspecting mark ( to be HAPPILY pick-pocketed ).

I don't have time to post it right now (BB6).
All 3 are simulated in my box which is about 9.2 cf and 3 x 4" ports. My 2245s are tuned to 29hz and BBP6 suggest 28hz for the 2240. The Yellow trace I bumped the 2240 up to 35hz and tuning it much higher the bottom starts dropping away.
IMO, the 2240 and other PA type 18s are better used in multiples where the low end couples resulting in a flatter curve for that use. :dont-know:
