I'm interested to hear what the educated JBL crowd here has to say about this comparison.
A 2235H based B380 sub compared to a 2226H in a 4507 enclosure.

I posed this question at the end of a thread in the DIY section but as time is a factor, I thought I would post it here for more attention.:o:

One is almost a subwoofer, the other is not. What are your goals?

One can't expect to rush an education ( without suffering the consequences ) .

@ Cozmo

What are you trying to achieve? What's the goal?
Loud party music? 2226 in 4507
Extra bottom end in your listening lounge? 2235 in B380

If you have those 4507 and a 2235, nothing can keep you from mating them together. Just plug two ports.

Looking for extra bottom end for listening or HT. Mating up with a reproduced 4612OK pair at this point.

I know the 4612 isn't the last word in refined detail, I just happened to acquire the guts to a pair.

For listening, the 2235 will be fine. But for Home theater, you will quickly find the limit of the 2235. A 2245 is better for HT. Or even a W15GTi...

W15GTi Car sub?

Hmmmm.

Yup. Just put it in a bigger box (but still smaller than a 2235 would like). For whatever reason, JBL decided to market the driver to car audio nuts but not home theater nuts. Look for a local pair as they are quite beefy and expensive to ship.

I take it the W15GTi is well regarded for home theater applications, what is the consensus for music?

I could search for threads on this but seeing how we are now discussing it here...what the heck.

FYI, I would likely be crossing it over at about 100hz or so to be used with the 4612 initially.

20-80Hz I think

I'm not exactly sure what you are referring to there Lee. The W15GTi rating?

The 4612, it's spec'd out down to about 60 to 80Hz. I was planning on limiting it to about 100.

The ears will pick-up the origin of a sound from around 50Hz and up. Even at 60hZ you can easily hear where the source is. So, at 100Hz, you are in the kicking frequency range (100-120Hz) and you will definitely hear the source. If you need extra woofers to get a physical feel, then stick to 20-50Hz. At 80Hz it becomes bothersome and the bass bins will need to be directly under your 4612. Most likely your speakers only need 20-60Hz. The 4612 are vocal reinforcement. Indeed not much bass, even though the car crowd uses the 2118 for midbass. Just let the 4612 die down to 60Hz. No filter required.

You can run a single W15GTi and keep it for 20-50Hz, located in a corner. And you'll be happy. But be aware that the W15GTi requires a big amp. ;-)

Well...I have a couple of Ashly FTX-2001 III amps for this project
Bridged mono good for 600 W @ 16 ohms, 950 W @ 8 ohms and about 1000 @ 6 ohms.
Damping factor of >250 @ 8 ohms

I notice the W15GTi has dual 6 ohm voice coils.

This ad from Quebec city shows three W15GTi w/ enclosure. Text is not clear but it appears it sells all therre for $600.00cad

Otherwise, eBay has plenty of them but the USD/CAD exchange will kill any deal.

I use a pair of W15GTi's in the theater with about 1200 watts going to them. They work well! :D

I would probably discourage the use of a 2235 for any HT duty as others have pointed out.

I found mine on CL for $400 for the pair. The car guys get hard up for cash it seems and part out their systems, at least here in Denver.

The only thing interesting in my neck of the woods at the present are a pair of what looks like W12GTi's

Oooo...and a pair of L5's just popped up too.:bouncy:

How about a pair of 2241H?
