View Full Version : What power amp?

I've posted before about my L100T's and was wondering if I could use a PA type power amp. I was at the local music store tonight and saw some great deals on QSC and Crown. The Crowns are probably low end (for the price I saw), said "made in China" but for $329 you get 260 wpc@8 ohms. The QSC was about $300 with 200 wpc.
Would they work well? I'm aware of the input connectors being different as well as input sensitivity differences but I would think just turning up the gain would take care of that.
I don't want to spend megabucks on a home unit unless I can get a deal.

Watch the fans if they have them. They can be louder than you realize in a quiet room.:smthsail: I use older Crown amps and think they sound very good. They have no fans are quiet as hell and can be strapped at the flick of a switch.

Those you've mentioned will work, most likely.

However, I've recommended used JBL amps from the 6200 series consistently here, with considerable agreement from fellow forumites. You can find them as low as $200 on eBay, and they appear there frequently.

These are beefy, clean, quiet workhorse pro amps with no fans. They don't disappoint.

Thanks, guys. BTW, damping factor seems to be the important thing? Most of these amps have fairly high damping values.

I use four of the Yamaha amps for HT and music and have found them to be an excellent value. (2 x P7000, P5000 and P2500)

They have temperature controlled fans and I have never had them come on, even during some pretty spirited listing sessions.

BTW, damping factor seems to be the important thing?

Yea, Bob - do a Search on "output impedance" (and impedEnce - our spelling acumen wanders a bit...)" and "damping factor". Quite a bit of relevant discussion should show-up.

I thought McIntosh amps do not have very high damping factors? I seem to remember reading that in a recent post.
Besides, I can't afford McIntosh:D

Another vote for McIntosh, true cult amps.:)
Latest models now have a damping factor of 200 or greater.

Hi,

Once more another vote for Mcintosh.
Really great amps. Have had several models from the seventies till now.
Never heard any problem with the dampingfactor. No matter if it was 15 or 200.
They always sound great!

No problem, just looking for a good home for it. I guess I'll send it the bay-way.
