I have been wanting to upgrade my L830's. I have my eye on a pair of LS40's and was hoping to get some opinions on their sound. They would be used my den system without a sub-woofer. I plan to give the L830's to a good friend who is need of tunes and has zero funds. Any information would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I am also considering the Studio 530's based on my positive experience with the 590's.

I haven't heard either model, but I'd probably go for the 530's based on experience with 580's and 590's. Yes, I'm a bit biased since I own the 590 as well, however I'd be open to others like the LS40 if not for reviews like this: http://www.whathifi.com/jbl/ls40/review They think the woofer's response is not at the same level as what the horns can do.

I don't always give pro reviews a lot of credence but What Hi-Fi has been very close to what I've heard out of other components they've reviewed. OTOH, I haven't seen anything bad written elsewhere about the 530's really. At least with the 2 models I've heard, I think JBL/G.T. has done a great job matching the mid/bass drivers in the Studio 500 series with their horns, no easy thing.

Without having heard either model or someone's personal recommendation that I trust, I'd start with the 530's. You can always return them if not happy.

Thanks Lowphreak, I am leaning toward the 530's mainly based on my experience with the 590's.
