Looking to build a separate subwoofer for my L212's to replace the B212.
It only has to cover 20-70hz and I will run it with a Crown XLS or XTI so I can set the high pass filter. If their is a better way to set the filters and power the drivers I am all ears.
Don't like my chances on getting a SUB1500 and would rather go with a single driver but if it is really that much of a benefit I will get two drivers and build two separate enclosures.
So first off can I get away with just a single subwoofer purely for music playback. I was thinking a 2242/2245 or 2235 or possibly a W15GTI as they are readily available.
Would be handy if I could use the subwoofer with my 4315A and L200 3-ways with 2235's. Though this is not necessary.
Sorry if this has been covered before.

What's your budget for a driver?
I'm using 1500AL's and am totally in love with them - best bass definition I've heard, amazing for music. However, they need a little EQ on the very bottom, but two of them play plenty loud for me. However, I think they were about $1,300 each when we could get them. I also have subwoofers with SUB1500's, W1500's, 2245's, and 2235's in them, and the 1500AL with EQ is still my favorite:) Second to that for music is probably the 2245, though you need a big box (look at the size of a B460 for a minimum). If you can find a 2245 with JBL cone, in good shape, I'd start with trying that.
If you want one of the more exotic drivers, you're going to have to pony up some $$ and bribe them out of a collectors hands. I have not been watching Ebay for a long time, but I know they show up every now and then. Someone else can chime in on pricing, but I'm thinking $450 for a SUB1500 and $750 for W1500's???

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.
Budget for the driver would be around 1K AUD which is around 700-800 USD at the moment.
Getting a 2245 with a Genuine cone could be a challenge.
The 2269 certainly looks interesting. Also reading on the forums regarding the 2256G, is it really identical to a W15GTI? I find it hard to believe that is EXACTLY the same.
I really would mind some LE14H subs but finding a set of them will be hard as well. Shipping is a killer considering I am in Australia too.

Well. Don't write the 2245 off too early ;-)
You can get a bare 2240 /2245 / e155 basket for $50.00 and add a genuine JBL recone kit for under $300.00 (unless they have increased in price). So basically, for your budget, you could end up with TWO brand new 2245 woofers. ;-)
And I won't mention aftermarket recone kits from Mackenzie for $80.00 each if you are willing to experiment.

Back to the question of one sub or two, you can get excellent results with one sub if you only need it at one prime listening area. 2 or 4 subs make it much easier to get good even bass across a larger area. Since you said purely music playback I'm assuming you only need a relatively small sweet spot so one sub should be OK. Of course, everything is room dependent.
I thought the supply of genuine JBL cones for the 2245 had dried up?

I was under the impression the genuine 2245 cones were now obsolete.
Jands wants $770 for a genuine recone kit and that is if they can even get one.....That is a joke in my opinion....So overpriced.
I have the CAD plans for the B460 off the site and I will likely get one made up and source a 2245 with a genuine cone from EBAY US.
Will drive it and set the crossover point with a Crown XTI or XLS. How does that sound?

Ditto. I've had lots of subs over the years, from Infinity Beta's to a pair Velodyne ULD 15's to a pair of Entec SW1's to Dynaudio 30W100's in a Vandersteen Model 4 and none sound as good and effortless as a pair of 18" JBL 2245's.

I have an AE TD18h+ across from a 2245 in the same room (near field). I'd say it compares favorably. Very clean, low distortion.
