Recently picked up a set of L212's with separate bass energizer. My local (and the only one in the state) speaker repairer had them for sale.
He is a bit of butcher when it comes to old JBL's and doesn't seem to give them the care they deserve. Foams have been stuck on front side of the cones on the 112As and 121As. It would appear he didnt have the right size foams for the 112A's so he has cut down another foam to size, also it isn't even a thin rolled surround. Didn't even bother to remove the old degrading foam from the back of the cones. Just felt like I had to vent my frustrations but that is not my question.
The B212 woofer had low output so I got my tech to completely rebuild the plate amp replacing every single component on the PCB with higher rated parts. I understand that the plate amp isn't up to the task of driving the 121A but wanted to keep everything in working order in case I want to sell them which is unlikely as I have too much invested in them.
Now I want to get the most out of the 121 and the system in general but am unsure the best way to go about this. These are my thoughts:
-Drive the 121A with a Crown XLS1000 setting the active crossover frequency at 70hz. Bridged these are 700 watts and I am aware that is overkill for the 121A but it has some sort of driver protection so I think this might be ok. Any suggestions/issues foreseen if I decide to go down this route?
-Find another more efficient JBL 12inch driver to place in the B212 enclosure......Don't like my chances here as I am sure if there was a better alternative it would have been covered already.
-Use the B212 with my L20T setup and look at other JBL sub combos....Maybe PS1400, L8400P....
Any ideas would be appreciated.
