View Full Version : Unsure where to go with my recently acquired L212's

Recently picked up a set of L212's with separate bass energizer. My local (and the only one in the state) speaker repairer had them for sale.

He is a bit of butcher when it comes to old JBL's and doesn't seem to give them the care they deserve. Foams have been stuck on front side of the cones on the 112As and 121As. It would appear he didnt have the right size foams for the 112A's so he has cut down another foam to size, also it isn't even a thin rolled surround. Didn't even bother to remove the old degrading foam from the back of the cones. Just felt like I had to vent my frustrations but that is not my question.

The B212 woofer had low output so I got my tech to completely rebuild the plate amp replacing every single component on the PCB with higher rated parts. I understand that the plate amp isn't up to the task of driving the 121A but wanted to keep everything in working order in case I want to sell them which is unlikely as I have too much invested in them.

Now I want to get the most out of the 121 and the system in general but am unsure the best way to go about this. These are my thoughts:

-Drive the 121A with a Crown XLS1000 setting the active crossover frequency at 70hz. Bridged these are 700 watts and I am aware that is overkill for the 121A but it has some sort of driver protection so I think this might be ok. Any suggestions/issues foreseen if I decide to go down this route?

-Find another more efficient JBL 12inch driver to place in the B212 enclosure......Don't like my chances here as I am sure if there was a better alternative it would have been covered already.

-Use the B212 with my L20T setup and look at other JBL sub combos....Maybe PS1400, L8400P....

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I don't know if a single 12 is going to be enough. Remember that CD had not even been invented when those were developed.

Ok, would i be better a single LE14H or 2235?

Otherwise my chances of getting another B212 are slim to none so how would two L8400P's go?

With the L212 panels you are really straight into B380 territory. Whether you can pick those up easily in Oz is another matter.
Too bad the service dude was too lazy to re foam properly. If it bothers you greatly take them off and do it again.
There's a thread in this forum somewhere about renovating 212's including time aligning the drive units.
I would suggest that the passive crossover could do with re capping.

Good luck

Yeah it is unlikely I could source a B380 in Oz. I know of a B460 I could get but it would probably work out cheaper to throw together a pair of LE14Hs or 2235s.

Kinda leaning towards LE14H as I have a set of 2235's in my upgraded L200 3-ways and have never heard the LE14's.

I also have a set of 4315B's I could use the separate subs with if I do end up building them.

Might even work out cheaper if I bite the bullet and buy a single 1500 Array, I hope one of them would be ample for the L212's.

Yeah I have gone over that thread a few times. The time alignment does look interesting but I would rather focus on crossovers and subs at the moment.

Appreciate your input so far mate.
