Last night pulled out 2 of his records I have not listened to in a long time. Zoot Allures and Apostrophe ('). Forgot how fun these 2 records are to listen to.

Zoot Allures is one of the most unique albums in Zappa's catalogue. Nearly all of the instruments are played by FZ himself (including bass!), with Ruth Underwood on percussion, the incomparable Terry Bozzio on drums, and some backing vocalists. It really is Zappa "stripped down" as its often described.

Words can't really do the music justice, but if you could imagine blues and funk mixed with jazz and given a good stiff dose of sometimes brash irony, you'd begin to get an understanding.

Totally agree! I love Zappa as well! He was a genius!
I don't have Zoot Allure yet!
I think the best of Zappa was with the Mothers of Invention...

Not everyone love Zappa though... I understand that...

Challenger604 I think you would enjoy Zoot Allures. Looking on discogs looks like they have first pressing in mint condition for little money compared to some. Listened to it again last night. Had some friends over and growing up this got regular play. It put a smile on all of our faces.

Studio Tan has been one of my favorites since I was a kid. Joe's garage Act 1, Hot Rats, Sheik Yerbouti, and Them or Us are also really great. But if I was going to give an album suggestion to someone who hasn't listen to Zappa ever Apostrophe would be the one, everything else is a little more out there.

Truthfully those 2 records are the ones that I listened to the most. Hardly listened to others and especially not in the last 30 years only those 2. I did go through some others today. Maybe fast forwarding and such. Hot Rats on vinyl more than likely will be my next Zappa purchase.

We used to be able to see Frank Zappa, live at Roxy in LA on Youtube, not anymore! Does anyone knows if their is an album of it? Maybe only on DVD?

I recorded it from my IPad to High Speed reel to reel but would like to find the album if it exist.

The Grand Wazoo is excellent as well... It's one of my references to show off my 4355's LOL!

I had a long history as a Mothers fan, starting with buying the first album "Freak Out" at the drugstore because it looked weird and it had a sticker of two records for the price of one! My friends and I got to meet Zappa at their first gig at the original Fillmore. We went early and sitting upstairs in the lounge/ bar all by himself was Frank. We all gathered around him and talked Varese, Stravinsky & Stockhausen. One of my friends uncle was Zappa's high school principle so that broke the ice. He invited us to come up on stage as part of the Laurel Canyon Ballet Company- I declined but my friends did.

I only enjoyed his stuff with the Mothers, as they had so much character. Vocalist Ray Collins was my favorite. "Uncle Meat" was the ultimate album, "Weasels Ripped My Flesh" had some great stuff too.

The interview with engineer Mark Pinske (http://www.mixonline.com/news/profiles/complete-mark-pinske-interview-day-two/373054) is fantastic. The stuff about Steve Vai is wonderful.

The Zappa family has this weird thing about not allowing anything on the web about Frank Zappa. They have sued fan sites, ect. I also didn't like Zappa remixing his old albums like "Ruben & The Jets".

Thanks for the laugh. I can picture it because my pops would have done the same.

On another note I remember having Black Sabbath Master of Reality cranked at the start where they cough. My mom ran in the room thinking I was choking. Later on we both had a good laugh.

Alright one more. I had DEVO are we not men cranked and after it was over I was fixing to go out with some friends. I remember what she told me walking out the door. She said (the natives are restless tonight). I just laughed and said yes they are.

The Zappa related project that elicited a total lack of comprehension and understanding at my college was An Evening With Wild Man Fisher. All except my roommate Ted, who thereafter would say "The leaves are falling" whenever a leaf spring suspension failed.
