I always like reading old hifi magazines. Looking to and reading about old fashioned audio gear is most fun!

Does anyone out there have a review on the 4343 or other vintage JBL monitors?

This would be interesting for a lot of us JBL maniacs :)

Hi Eckhard!

The 4425 test is from Stereo 4/91 and I have it. But it is in German so I didn't post to the forum. The result was that the 4425 are far to analytic and therefore are not at all usable at home.
Of course this is Bullshit.

One can easily see that the Bass Speaker is basically a JBL 2214

Guido

There was a JBL 4435 review in Stereoplay, that's for sure! Can't remember the Year/Issue though.

The 4435 review was a lukewarm affair, if my memory serves me right. I will try to locate it, but most of the JBL Reviews in the German Mags aren't worth a toss. JBL was either stuff for the pros and therefore not recommended for the "home listener" or it was "California Sound" and therefore not "sonically accurate". That all changed with the advent of the 250Ti, which received excellent reviews. Ditto it's successor, the Ti 5000(which, I think, is not very well known in the US).

Rob, the fazit was that the 4425 has excellent and unbelievable bass response but overall is far to accurate to use it as a home speaker. They made the example that the crackling of vinyl was not to sustain and they didn't like to hear every mistake off the recording engineer.
But still I love those little monsters :D

Result for the Urei was the same. Even more accurate.

The 4425 has excellent and unbelievable bass response but overall is far too accurate to use it as a home speaker....I'd expect the German taste to actually favor the more accurate, sometimes "dry," character of JBL monitors. ;)

So how about a review of the 4343?

Rob, the fazit was that the 4425 has excellent and unbelievable bass response but overall is far to accurate to use it as a home speaker. That goes completely against what JBL found in their "blind" listening tests from the article in Don's post. http://www.reed-electronics.com/tmworld/article/CA475937.html

They found that trained and untrained listeners both preferred flat (accurate) response. In fact the flatter (more accurate) the better.

Must be a lot of science in this package! Which measurements do they use to determine the listening preferences of this buying group?

This is typical behavior of german HIFI Mags.

As I own a pair of 4425 I know that this test result is nonsense.

But I like the pics and measurements in this article.

Oh, and they realized that the 2416H is infact a 4 ohm driver :D
