2447J vs 2426H

I have long used a number of JBL sp212-A and always enjoyed them for the high spl, clarity, and good relatively flat response in small to medium rooms. Recently i picked up a couple of pairs of the 212-9 and find the sound so drastically different and really not enjoyable. They almost sound like they have a phasing issue and a great hole in the mid range. Guitar solos simply fade away as do some vocals.

i realise they have different compression drivers and flares between the two models but i really didnt expect such a drastic difference in the same range. Can anyone explain what the differences between the two models was intended to be? is the 212-9 with the larger 2447J's intended for larger spaces and thus not good listening in smaller rooms?

All four sp212-9 have the same sound. I've pulled one down to check the components for non genuine cone/diaphragm. The 2206Hpl cone only has one marking being a white 71117 stamp on the back near the terminals.

The diaphragm has an AKG branding on it. Being under the same parent company is this common for cross over parts or maybe an incorrect diaphragm?

Are you using these 4 ( sp212-9's ) for SR ( live sound ) work ?

If so, ( google ) educate yourself about the destructive effects of "comb-filtering" ( caused by horn overlap ) .

- One loses coherence when one allows two ( close proximity ) horns to overlap their overall coverage.

- You'd be better swapping out the 90deg horns for narrower coverage types ( such as some 60deg type ) & trying to minimize the overlap.

- OTOH, you might just stack a pair ( woofer to woofer ) & then turn off the bottom horn ( or at least turn it down 3 - 6 db ) .
