Hello I'm Don from Regina, SK. I am late to the JBL scene as my wallet would not permit ownership in my youth but I have recently come to appreciate ownership of some fine JBL products.

Today I picked up some sort of JBL bastardized speakers to add to my collection...

They each have a 075 tweeter, D130 "woofer" (more of a full range no?) and a N2400 crossover.

Sadly one of the D130's is not very happy at all, check out the YouTube link below the photo...

So now I'm thinking I should send out the two D130's for a recone, chances are if one is blown the other was abused as well, so who does the best recones on JBL in Canada better if they are close to Saskatchewan but that's probably not likely.

Also has anyone seen a JBL speaker like this before? Looks sort of DIY to me which leads to my thread title, did JBL sell these components as a kit to budding speaker builders? A quick look on Google shows these drivers and crossover in many different DIY looking cabinets.

i have removed the components from these poorly made cabinets with the intention of installing them into a cabinet of my own design. I will probably install new components in the crossovers and upgrade the wiring, is the N2400 an ideal crossover for these drivers or can some improvements be had by changing the crossover frequencies?

I appreciate any and all comments and insights you may have, thank you for your consideration.

Thanks
Don

SCMedia is the Canadian JBL Pro distributor and may be able to direct you to an authorized re-coning facility. If they fail you I know a great guy in Victoria.

Sorry I can't help with your other questions but good luck and keep us posted.

Thank you. I have contacted SCMedia on your suggestion and I will wait on a reply however, personal recommendations of known good repair centers is preferable so if anyone has had positive experiences with local technicians I would be thankful to hear what you have to say.

thanks again!

Yes, they're probably DIY cabinets.
A bit of mimicking the C50SM in the top and bottom overhangs but the proportions aren't even close to a "real" JBL box.

Yes, JBL sold the 030 load without a cabinet, if that's what you're asking in your subject.

Does JBL even still offer a cone kit for a D130?

No telling what kind of abuse it takes to fry a D130. The voice coil is aluminum so probably not as robust as the copper in, say, a 130A, but I have 030s that have lived in the same house with me for over 55 years. They've played at insane volume levels powered by, first, a cheap Kenwood receiver, then a Fisher SA1000, for decades with a Crown D150, then a DC300A-II, and they went into retirement after years connected to a Crown PS400. During my college years in the Blue Ridge Mountains they spent nearly every weekend on the back porch playing to the Blue Ridge while we partied all night long on an 850-acre farm where I was renting. One summer the Crown D150 went into thermal shut-down and I had to get a little more air to the heat sinks to continue the JBL abuse. But the D130s never faltered through all that. The 030 system takes a lot of flack for the beaming of the 075 but it was my gateway to the JBL world and they still sound like magic to me today, especially on strings of any kind. I always thought an N1200 and an LE175DLH along with an N7000 for the 075 would fill that hole in the mid-range and I still intend to add the HF horn and tri-amp my pair some time—more as an experiment than anything else. I have several Crown VFX2-A crossovers, a couple of Crown D45, D75A, and D150A-IIs that I think will play nicely with them.
