View Full Version : Horizontal or vertical mounting of horn/waveguide, aka Array wanna be ?

Hi,

I’m building new cabinets for my HT and was thinking about the mounting of the horns/waveguides.

It seems like Mr Timbers and also 4313B’s "DYI Array 1200" gave very good results and in the threads it is indicated that vertical horns may indeed sound better than horizontal.

Not being able to fit original JBL Array’s in my room for various reasons, the DIY Array 1200 is a very tempting concept. With SAM1-HF horn without drivers no longer available I need to look at other reasonable sized horns, hence the thought of using 2332 or FT-95HF. I’m using 2332 today but in a traditional horizontal mount.

So my question here is whether there would be improvement to mount a 2332 or a FT-95HF vertically. -Or is the vertical position only beneficial to specific horns, ie SAM1-HF & H9800? What

Very few diy'ers seem to try this alternative. Here is one (of few) non-Harman example

Any thoughts appreciated

Kind regards

What about the JBL 580s, 590s and similar newer designs?

Those are 580's. These are 590's :):

Judging by the imaging and wide soundstage I get from these being vertically mounted, I'd say it works well. I haven't positioned them horizontally to compare yet though, like my old 4412's.

:spchless: ;)

Kidding aside, I'm sure it would depend on the particular dispersion pattern and frequency response of a given horn/driver, Rob, or personal preference. Can you try some vertically mounted horns to get an idea?
