I have a pair of 288c drivers and need horns. My issue is space so the larger multi cells wont really work as they will be sitting atop of a pair of 612 utility cabs loaded with 515bs (which is basically 18" deep)..I know its a bad idea to use a 511b or 811b with an adaptor or just drilling new holes..I was thinking of modifying a pair of 511 to a 511e but before I alter horns I thought Id ask ..any ideas staying within the altec line would be appreciated...thanks in advance

If you use a 511, the "right" way is to cut the throat shorter & weld on an appropriate flange for the large format driver. That seems to be what Altec did for the 511E version. The 511E version also featured a layer of damping material, which is a very good idea for any 511 where you care about the sound quality. Adapting smaller to the regular 511B will almost certainly result in some nasty response ripples.

A horn that's "sort of Altec" that will also work, with no cutting and welding required, is the Emilar EH500-2. It's a 2" inlet horn, so you would need a 1.4" to 2" adapter, which is widely available, and isn't a problem sonically as long as flare rates match reasonably well and care is taken to center the corresponding openings in the adapter and horn, and driver to adapter. The Emilar is reasonably small, 17 x 7.5" at the mounting flange, but it's probably best used above 800Hz. My two cents.

Actual EH500-2s pop up on eBay from time to time. The same casting was also used by Emilar to produce horns for Showco:

You could use either the Faital LTH 142 horns or the Eighteen Sound XT1464 horns. They are both 1.4 inch horns and with a little bit of grinding will fit the 288's bolt pattern.

I like the XT1464 the best. I use them on my 399's. They sound a lot like the QSC PL-000466GP horns (HPR 152i’s) that is a 1" horn.

And the prices aren't bad new either.
