Yep - I was logged in - walked away for 4 hours, came back and refreshed the page,
and I'm still logged in ...

Isn't there a little "[v] Keep me logged in" check close to your credentials when logging in?

I usually only have to log in every month or so, normally with a browser upgrade.

Only check box is one labeled "remember me".

My problems with computers are legion!!!! First job I'd hire for would be a savvy computer operator! How in ____ are people who did not grow up or have no interest in computer technology supposed to operate these ____ things without having problems???

My computer connects to the internet via Verizon FIOS, I don't use a Cable TV hookup or a dial up modem connection. Its not a PC computer using some version of Windows, its a MacPro desktop machine, and I'm using Yosemite (the latest version of the Mac operating system). Some folks use Internet Explorer, the Microsoft web browser. Firefox is the Web browser that started life as Netscape way back when. See - not so hard ... and yeah, I came to computers later in life ... but I am a geekie/techie/engineer kind of person ... I did radio station type electronics in College ...

*Can't keep up with it anymore - esp the older you get!

**Or maybe because of it?

P.S. I use an older second hand desktop (Windows xp) connected via AT&T by phone line - both give me trouble - sometimes its almost like being on dial up!

I really have no business operating a computer anymore then I would piloting a 767! ROTFTMHO

Anyway, since starting this thread, I don't (so far) "seem" to be having the same log in problem - did somebody do something??

So let me ask - what exactly is the function of the "remember me" button? Is it merely (as I suspect) to remember you and automatically fill in your I.D. and password or is its function to keep you logged in until you manually log out?

Other forums I've used let you specify how many minutes you will remain logged in and none have this problem I'm asking about (being repeatedly logged out).

Hate to have to say this but now I wonder how long before this question gets answered :banghead:

Nope ... Been a member here many years.
I logged for many years from work with a windows computer and Netscape and later Firefox,
logged in from home with a Mac and Firefox, even log in with Safari from my phone -
seems to remember me and keep me logged in fine.

Are you logging in directly or do you use one of the forum software tools like Tap-A-Talk?
Some of the folks at AK using Tap-A-Talk had problems - and there are security issues with that software.

Ah - just read your old posts from Oct 2014 ... [btw - How long ago WAS college??]

Are you still using Win-XP and an AT&T phone modem or whatever it is you were referring to back then??
Not even sure what kind of browser is available in Win-XP -
some early edition of Internet Explorer?

Wikipedia says :
The Windows XP operating system was released for retail sale on October 25, 2001. (nearly 15 years ago - almost 30 in Internet years)

Extended support for Windows XP ended on April 8, 2014, after which the operating system ceased receiving further support or security updates to most users. As of March 2016, Windows XP desktop market share is 7.4%

Thanks but I'd rather this NOT drag on with others "guessing" as to its function.

Now to Heather - thanks for trying to help me.

I log on direct over my AT&T phone line all properly installed - with filters and I only have (can afford) land line and internet costing about $115/mo (and rising :(). I am using a newer Dell computer with Windows 7 and Chrome browser if that helps.

Just had to log back in after doing some other work for only a few minutes so I suspect the problem is back again - quite aggravating. From the link the super moderator posted, looks like there are lots of problems out there!

Never heard of tap-a talk nor do I have any idea as to what "V-bulletin" is (and please don't waste your time trying to explain it to me). Can/will you explain what the function of "remember me" is?

Just had a thought - maybe I should post my phone # so members can talk direct to me to better understand me but maybe not such a good idea (posting a ph. # here) ?

I was trying to come accross with some humility, not a know it all.

Vbulletin is the web fomat of this site, and many others like DIY audio. The virtual buttons can be configured for fuction as well as how they read. "Remember me" here is the same as "keep me logged" in on DIY.

I have not had to log in here or on DIY in months if not years on my iPhone, Win7 laptop, or any of my three Win10 desktops and I can read something here on this site on my phone while typing an answer on this site on a computer.

But if I were you, I wouldn't try it. It just may solve the problem, and what fun would that be?

Out!

"Remember me" sets a persistent cookie in addition to the normal session cookie. The normal sesson cookie allows you log in and browse, then goes away when you leave the site or log out. The persistent cookie will allow you to be automatically logged in the next time you visit, so long as you just close your browsing session and don't manually log out. But you need to have "accept cookies" enabled in your browser, some people don't like to accept cookies as the idea of cookies tracking them is unnerving.

Long story short - if you don't want to log in with every visit, the check "remember me" or never close your connection to the site.

Forget Tap-a-talk ... you don't have it so its not important here ..

Vbulletin is the website/Forum software used here at Lansing forum -
Other sites may have the newer version 5 (which has some issues),
some use older ver 3.x - but here at Lansing Forum they use Version 4.22

If you want to Talk to folks -
have them PM you to get your phone number do NOT post it on the open pages here!

This site and some others use a little code thing called a "cookie" your browser keeps track of cookies,
and should keep you logged in by checking to see if you have a cookie for this site as you come and go.
If you have something in Chrome (your browser) set to "delete cookies", then there is no way for your browser
to keep you logged in.

There are other ways to not have your login info available every time you come here,
but lets start with the one thing (browser settings), check that, and go to other things as needed.
A nice, logical approach - 1 thing at a time.

I do not have Chrome on my machine - so perhaps someone that DOES use Chrome can compare notes with you ...

Most browsers usually have a "privacy setting" - I use Firefox and it has a Preference screen called "Privacy"
that is current set to "Remember History" - so it remembers login cookies and things like that.

You can look at your settings in Chrome,
and as long as you just hit CANCEL once you look at them, you should not change anything or cause a problem.

seems that you could absorb the help the forum has offered and accept that your knowledge needs upgrading, rather than blame the wrong entity.

do a little troubleshooting. If only you are having the difficulty, then the direction to look for a fix is much easier.

and again! Seems I go to some other window or don't do something here for a couple minutes and Bam - I'm logged out! Wth!!

Anyone help explain what the ___ is going on???????

Calling earth!!!! Hello???

My original post was over 1-1/2 years ago and no one has explained or tried helping with this problem!!
and it's occurring too quickly for your liking.....................

If I don't engage in any activity while here at LH, the program will "log me out" automatically too (and relatively quickly compared to some other sites)

It is a privacy/session/setting/function on your machine, NOT the fault of anything here at the site (your software is subject to "updates" anytime you are "on-line" so that is one reason things don't always stay the way you are accustomed to, or like/want them to be) It is the reason that some operating behaviors change on you, even when you didn't "do" anything..............welcome to the world that is Microsoft

No one short of a clairvoyant is going to be able to give you a SPECIFIC answer, and fix, for your question/concerns/bitch because no one knows all of the particulars regarding your operating system, the browser you are using and how you have that configured, so there is no need to be a smart ass about it when someone tries to help you with an answer you either don't want to hear and or don't understand

I am a computer dumb ass myself, but I know enough to know that what I am telling you is accurate information

Works the same way things do on my Schwab account page(s) or my Kaiser medical on-line pages/account, but in those instances the log out is initiated on their end for obvious reasons, the material accessible when logged in to either of those accounts can be very sensitive

It's to help preserve your privacy, in case you "left the oven on" so to speak; in other words, if you were viewing or engaged in an activity you wished to remain secure or private and were called away, that, or using a multiple user machine

The behavior is normal and probably the result of some default setting of your operating system......................I deal with it by simply re-typing my user name and password

But yes, LH is a little "quick on the draw" when compared to some other sites which behave the same way (for example, Kaiser won't log me out for at least 20 minutes), *LH is bit quicker to do so

I have never pursued changing things (settings), I don't even use the "remember me" option as I don't like getting into that habit as this machine is shared as I just mentioned

I don't really see what the rub is and if it's that big a deal (to simply re-enter your log in info), go into your settings and make the necessary adjustments

You computer doesn't know whether you are viewing your stock portfolio, your private medical records or porn, so in your best interest, the operating system (depending on your settings and the site in question) "signs/logs you out" after a certain amount of time has passed with no activity (you doing something) in order to protect your privacy, unless YOU tell it to do otherwise

If you do not know how to check/do this yourself, you are going to have to find someone there with you and in person (a very kind and patient person, willing to endure your abuse), to help you cure what's bugging you. You do not appear to have the temperament to allow folks on-line to try and help you by walking you through it.

Every suggestion, about anything, sent your way only elicits and argument, insults or an excuse out of you: that is why I am not volunteering for the job

Good luck

*Case in point, I was logged out while typing this post

Now you have the link to vBulletin's forum. They have the right knowledge to give you any more than educated guesswork.

Back to your problem. Here's my 2 cents worth of guessing:
1) Somewhere in your audioheritage.org profile there might be a configuration that logs you out, which I haven't found. Maybe the vBulletin forum can help you there.
2) The issue resides on your computer. Which is your table/responsibility entirely. Windows is a very flexible platform. Each user can configure and/or install lots of software that modify the behaviour.

Since this works satisfactory for most users, there is little reason to believe it is an issue with our vBulletin installation and / or server.

I believe you need local hands-on help.

Good luck.

But as long as the problem doesn't reappear I won't worry about it. Guess I now will see what happens today.
