JBL 034 tweeter

Hi all,

Im new here and from Australia.

I have just picked up some nice L15 speakers. LF drivers are being re rolled. One of the HF 034 tweeters is no good (open circut) I have checked ebay and there a a couple of 2nd hand units there. Is there anyone here or known to sell original or VG quality diaphram kits?

what about NOS 034?

any help appriceated

034 is pretty much a one-of-a-kind driver. It was only used on a few consumer models, L15, L46, L56 and L86.
I'd just grab a couple used ones off eBay.

I do have one here with a cracked flange that looks good and measures 5.5u for DCR. I have no idea where it came from.

What tweeter did jbl put in the equivalent studio moniter?

I have seen a couple of 052ti tweeters for sale and it says these are the jbl replacement for the 034?

If nothing else, I bet a pair of 033 tweeters would work well. 033 and 034 are an exact fit for each other. Same diameter, same 3 screws, etc. 033 has a metal frame unlike the plastic frame of the 034 though.

For the L150 speakers, the 034 is listed by JBL as a replacement for the 033 in the event that the 033 is not available. I actually bought a pair of 034s to try them and I can confirm that they sound very very similar to the 033. The issue I ultimately ran into was that the tweeter compartment in the L150 is not sealed. The plastic frame of the 034 caused the whole tweeter to act almost like a passive radiator at higher volumes, which obviously was a deal-breaker :(

Thankfully you would not have that issue putting the metal framed 033 into something that previously used the 034.

The 4401 is the equivalent of your L15.

more specificly I was looking to see if the 4401 uses the same tweeter or another. It looks like it uses the same 034 tweeter.

yes I bought a 034 tweeter from that guy 2 days ago. In fact it is the EXACT same picture......hmmm hope all is ok.

I also bought a aftermarket diaphram from another source

It's aluminum on a soft dome. How it got there is anyone's guess. It's not unusual to see it flaking off, so its good to avoid touching the dome.

Ok thanks. I have mine apart and they are original. They definitely look like Phenolic for the dome and then aluminum coating

The aluminum coated domes are low resistance (ohmmeter probes on edge of diaphragm) ... The painted ones, not so much.

Any thoughts ?

Help with L15 Refurbish
1) Cabinets, dampening, leave it, add to it, remove/replace it ????

2) 034 Tweeter has lost it's silver paint/aluminum? covering, works, replace, repaint ??

3) Crossover, Cap replacement suggestions
Change inductors to air ?
Change resistors ?
Build external "charged xover" ?
Change xover frequency to 3K(read somewhere?)
4) Change connectors
And anything that will help with project.
Not worried about keeping original.
Just having FUN.
Pair of 4406's after these.

Handy info, if you work at a place that maintains large optical telecscope first-surface mirrors. :D

Just paint the 034 lightly if cosmetics are a bother.
