Hello folks, I have a question on a set of 4435s. I found a set that has everything but the woofers. Cabinets are great shape and horns are like new.seller is asking 2k. Is this a fair price considering the rarity of these and not much needed work on the cabinets

I haven't seen a pair for sale for a while but that seems a bit high to me. It will likely cost you nearly $1K for four pristine 2234's if and when they come around.

I paid $2K for a pristine pair of 4435's a few years ago though it does seems like sale prices are creeping back up so if you really want them, buy them. If you are thinking to make money on a re-sale I think they're to high.

I'm going to have to venture a guess here but in short I'll bet they would sound great anyway. I have experimented with 2234/2235's and to me the differences are audable but not dramatic. The 4435 has nearly 12dB of mid frequency cut available on the front and with a -2to3 dB cut the horn could likely closely match the reduction in mid-band sensativity of the 15's with mass rings installed. I don't know how far that control gets into the woffers though.

It seems to suprise people that a 2-15 box like the 4435 can seem bass shy but they just don't exagerate at all, if it's in the track you hear it with authority.

If you find a pair of 2234's put them under the horns and leave the 2235's in as the low frequency only drivers.

It will be fun to see how you go.

I think since there's not much cabinet work to be done and the horns are like new it might not be too bad of a price. I had I pair of 4435s years ago, They were in bad shape with extensive work needed on the cabinets and not the correct woofers.Sold them for over a grand.............................

A very nice set of 4435's went for $3200ish a few months ago on EBay. Unfortunate you missed them. I have a pair with re-covered cabs, wish I had good cabs cuz they sound great. 2234's. If you have the room I'd go for them. You will eventually find some 2235's and can recone them without the mass-ring when you win the lottery for about $275ea plus cost of speaker. One 2235 on EBay right now for decent price but not perfect recone/foam. Plus a dubious pair for $1200 BIN, 7 ohms DCR is too high so must be non-JBL voice coil. Do not buy any 2225's etc as not 2234-able.

I checked a week ago (Friday) and 2234/2235 kits are on the shelf at JBL, 2245's to.

Yep.I'm having 2205s reconed into 2235s as we speak. There are a few motors that will work.

Thanks for clearing that up. Any idea of current recone kit prices for those kits you saw on the shelf? Latest online price list I can find is 2012.
