Hello to all!

Please I need an information. Recently I got a mint matched pair of 604E. The only spots are some grey paint on the magnet that is slightly chipped.

Do someone knows the kind of enamel and its RAL code to make an "original" touch-up?

In the meanwhile I had the chance to get a mint pair of Mastering Lab 604/605 Crossovers. I am waiting to collect them so I am taking infos about them.

Are these more better than original Altec 1500-A? I hope so... http://www.hostboard.com/forums/images/smilies/smilies2/wink.gif

Do you suggest to put the crossover wires directly into 604 posts or to solder the cable ends in advance or, even better, to put some pin connectors on the wires like these ones?

Thanks!

Contact Great Plains Audio about your paint question. Bill Hanuschak did a wonderful job restoring a pair of E's for me a few years ago, which included painting a correct vintage green cap I sent him because the original had a nasty irreparable crack in it. My only regret is that I never got to use the speakers because I had to sell them. :banghead:

Are the ML crossovers better than the ALTEC?

Does the Pope wear a pointy hat?

It's good practice to tin speaker leads, especially with the old screw terminals. Personally I don't like those things. I learned back in 1972 with my first eight 421A's in my bass rig, that using 12AWG solid wire caused them to vibrate loose. It didn't take me long as a know-it-all teenager to figure out that more isn't always best. Switching to 14AWG stranded fixed the problem. Using a solid pin may be a head ache you don't want to deal with.

Good luck, H.F.

BTW - Was using eight 15" ALTEC speakers in two Quilter 4x15's for a bass rig a bit too much? No one ever told me they couldn't hear the bass. Using an Ampeg SVT head may have had something to do with it, but one can only speculate :-P
