I'm hoping someone can tell me how to identify a genuine JBL cone from an after market one. The fact that there's several iterations doesn't help matters. Is it even possible? Thanks in advance.

The dome size can be a good indicator, as well as the size of the glued tinsels on the front. Could also be the texture in the aquaplas at the back.

Also, we've seen several times in the past some 2245 with 2240 recone sold as 2245, just because the foilcap said so...

If it doesn't have aguaplas on the back it's not a real kit. Early ones had white latter black.

Thank you guys. Looks like I have one pair with and one pair without. The pair with aquaplas also has a more flexible/pliable nature about it as it thins nearing the surround whereas the other pair seems to be equally stiff/thick across the entire diaphragm. The aquaplas pair is thinner near the surround regardless. It seems to be pressed out harder. I've sent Edgewound an e-mail for a price.

Did you purchase the Kijiji ones in Mississauga?

Yes, as a matter of fact I did. Don is a diy'er who used them in his own cabs 10 years ago. They need re-foaming, measure about 7.4 ohms each and have no aquaplas. I paid $200.00 for the pair. While I was in Mississauga, I picked up 4 other 2245 with blown 2240 cones for another $200.00 from someone else. I feel I got what I paid for. Correct me if I'm wrong. Kijiji can be a resource as long as you're aware of exactly what you are buying. Which in the first case, I was not. I asked him if the cones were oem before I went there. He said they were. I was skeptical when I saw them but thought $200.00 is not a huge risk since he did want to sell them as a working pair. Hence the birth of this thread :)

I guess the follow-up is how do you tell the difference between motors other than foil-cal and the obvious? Or is it just obvious?

Ah, ah. I also noticed those 4 others. $200 for 4 baskets. Exactly what I needed. If you want to sell a pair, let me know. ;) Lee

Thanks Gasfan for allowing me to purchase two 2245 baskets off you. They will be put to good use.
BTW Everytime I unpack an 18", I can't help feeling how huge those things are ;-)

Lee, that is a cool cabinet design. Did you think of that?

Lee, that is a cool cabinet design. Did you think of that?

The design comes from three imperatives - Must take no more than three sheets of 4'x8' for two cabinets. Must be rigid, hence the double walls, acting as vents for the bass reflex. Must have a smaller frontal viusal impact, hence the depth. All said and done, it looks like an Onken, but it's just coincidence. I could increase the volume, but it will take another sheet of wood.

You can Google "Onken" to see what they look like
