View Full Version : 128H-1 acceptable to mate up with a 4612OK?

First off, I'm a newb as far as JBL speakers are concerned. Having said that...
I was recently given the bits from a 4612OK minus two 2118J's
In other words, I have two 2404H-1 HF drivers (with 2402 diaphragms), two 2118J eight inch mids and the crossover from the 4612OK that they likely came out of.
I have a line on two more 2118J's to complete the original kit (4612OK) which I was planning on doing as I have heard that they are worth keeping to use for music in a two channel home system
I understand that to make them work for a home system, one would have to match them up with something to fill in the LF end.
I have seen a pair of 128H-1's pop up for sale and am wondering if this 12 inch would match well with what I already have?

Is that the same subject as your other thread?

It looks like it could work. But you will have to match efficiencies. That's a good start anyway.

Hi,
IMO, you'd be better off exercising some patience until a good looking pair of le14a woofers come along ( this side of the border ) .
FWIW, JBL matched a 14" woofer ( the le14h-1 ) with an eight ( the 108H, which was a derivative of the 2118H / made by adding aquaplas to the cone surface ) , plus a 5" mid & a tweeter .
Your best bet is to bi-amp between the woofer ( any woofer actually ) & those remnants of the 4612OK ( that you have in hand ) .
You don't need to buy another pair of 2118j's for any HiFi reason ( only if you want to recreate the 4612 for PA purposes ) .

I did touch on this with my last post...this one is more specific to one particular woofer I've seen come up for sale.
I was going to acquire a second 2118J just to complete the 4612, since I already have the crossover and the one 2118J that I have is 16 ohm. It would only work with an additional 16 ohm 2118.
I would think I would have to get a nice woofer of some description and install it in it's own enclosure. Then bi-amp the two sets.
Either that or get a decent stand alone subwoofer and be done with it.
Since I was given these components for free, I thought it would be an idea to create a system of all JBL drivers. The 4612 is suppose to be good for music (not just as in a P.A. system) but needs a woofer or subwoofer as they only go down to around 80Hz.
Or...maybe they aren't worth the effort and I'm just polishing a turd, I dunno. I'm just trying to sort through the situation I've been handed. The parts I have so far seem too nice to just do nothing with.

If you go the way of fitting a second 2118, then I suggest redoing the cabinet. Make it bigger so that it gains some extension, and retune it lower than the 4612 cabinet (if I remember it has an open back anyway). The 2118 is favored by car sound systems because it can be abused, while having a nice midrange and upper bass. Then they add gazillions of woofers to it ;-)
Actually, your idea of running seprate subwoofers is a good one as you won't have to change your crossover network (even though it is a very simple one that could easily be redesigned and improved for cheap).

I don't think it has an open back...

I was thinking of using the same internal volume and port sizes but orienting the drivers in a vertical line. One "woofer" above the other and the tweeter above those two. I figured that the engineers had done all the hard work and I could just shift the driver positions.
Making it bigger I can do, retuning it might be a bit over my head.
I am open to any suggestions though.
