Hi folks, first post here.:)

A co-worker gifted me a set of really nasty looking home made two way speakers with bits rattling around inside.

Turns out the guts were 2404H tweeters, 2118J woofers and JBL crossovers. In other words the guts from an old pair of 4612 OK's minus two of the afore mentioned 2118J woofers.

I do have a line two more 2118J's to complete the kit.

Is it worth my while to rebuild these and make a nice set of 4612 OK's or would I be better off using the parts for something else?

Cheers.

The 2404 baby butt tweeter is nice, and so is the 2118 for mid bass and medium frequencies. Why not source a pair Very Low Frequencies woofers and build a quality 3-way system? Try finding a set of 2245 18" woofers. You won't be disapointed. Make one small box for the 2118 (200Hz-4KHz) and the 2204 (4KHz and up - with a little boost from 12KHz and up). And a much bigger one for the 18" woofwoof

The problem with that plan is that the 2118 is a J model. 16 ohms.

In the original 4612OK set-up, the two 2118J's were wired in parallel to make 8 ohms.

I do have the original 4612OK crossover (albeit, in somewhat rough shape), so the easy route would be to buy two more 2118J's and build a nicer looking 4612OK for home use.

I have read since these don't go that low, so matching them with a good subwoofer is an option.

That would be the simplest way to go, and all the sound engineering is already performed (cabinet size and crossover design). However, at this stage in my life, I much prefer high quality sound over high volume sound.:D

So I guess I'm asking if the 4612OK is suitable for music in a home environment. The original design was for pro use; voice, keyboard, harp etc.

Or am I further ahead just to part these out and move on to a different project.

The 2118 drivers are NOT really woofers and have no bass. It starts falling at 100Hz with -20db at 50Hz and -30db at 40Hz.
The 4612 was designed mainly as vocal reinforcement a far as I know.

The 2404 and 2118 are great drivers. Just add a woofer.

Download the white papers and see by yourself.
