JBL L300 original finish colors

Hello. Just a real quick inquiry about JBL L300. Just wondering if anyone knew all of the original finish colors. Such as oil walnut and anything beyond that. The reason I'm asking is I am wondering if they were ever produced with a black finish from factory

Think the piano black finish and "black ash" finish came much later.

Did you find a pair in black finish, or do you want a pair in a Black finish?

Found a black pair. Looks original like yamaha ns1000 look

Its not original, I can see the wood finish underneath on the edges,
so that kind of ruins the resale value, but - do you like that finish?

Rotated the photo to help out - it does LOOK like the upper edges are rounded ...
but most of the vintage fans would say that paint has to go!

Probably less work to re veneer the lot. Meaning just veneer over the top of whats there. Stripping back black will be a huge pain.

Yes indeed , nonetheless as long as you run the grain as per the originals you can roll the veneer over the solid roundover without issue.

Yes indeed , nonetheless as long as you run the grain as per the originals you can roll the veneer over the solid roundover without issue.

Widget the only reason the originals were done the way they were is because they used pre veneered stock for the body of the cabinet and the solids were used for the roundover. Factory machine tools allow this because they are accurate and hence the joint is scarcely noticeable. A little filler and its gone.
Post veneering is more time consuming ergo more costly and therefore not viable against a price point.
I don't consider either to be a better way but for the OP post veneering should give a better result.

script - you may have to refoam what you have, recone with JBL 2235H kit or update to the current 2235H's. Haven't seen a useable original pair of 136A's or 2231A's for some time.

Found some 2231a reconed with 2235. So about the new veneer... It should be easiest to apply it over the old veneer after I remove black paint? Should peel n stick veneer hold over the bend in cabinets?

The radius of that curve would be no problem. I personally would try stripping and refinishing first in an attempt to keep them close to stock. You have nothing to lose and the resale value will be higher. They sure look nasty in black.

IIRC, Storm purchased (then attempted to quickly sell) a painted black pair of 250TI's.

I would definitely give the strip a go. Pull all the drivers and mask off the front. I would even tape off 16th of an inch near the borders of the front and back of the black just to make sure there's no seepage from the stripper material. It's a lot easier than applying the veneer. If your ever down St. Louis way Drop them off!
