View Full Version : Small speaker system using TAD TD-2001?

I'd like to use a pair of TAD TD-2001 to make a compact (2-3 cu.ft.), high sensitivity, two- or three-way system. Possibly a two-way with dual 10" or 12" woofers.

I have a pair of 650 Hz wooden tractrix horns, but find the dispersion is rather narrow; am thinking of DDS 90 x 90 degree round horns as an alternative, crossed over between 1200 and 1500 Hz..

I'd appreciate recommendations for woofers or woofer-and-mids....

TIA,

Joel.

The lack of replies might be due to the fact that this is a Lansing forum. The TD2001 is a very good driver. Maybe you could find some info in this (http://www.audioheritage.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?35073-Two-way-system-with-TAD-TD-2001&highlight=tad+2001) thread even if its a bit shallow. Your tractrix horns should work I believe, what do they look like, round?

Yes, the 650 Hz tractrix horns were made (and signed!) by Bruce Edgar. They are of the "round salad bowl" type. But, as I said, I find the dispersion excessively narrow. Over the years, I've seen a lot of discussion of TAD drivers on this site; that's why I posted my first query here...Thanks for the link! Joel.

dub ,

Please, please feel free to post any TAD related project here ….. " Lansing Heritage " includes TAD components . There are many TAD-centric threads in the search !

best wishes , Richard

I agree with Richard

TAD (http://www.proaudiodesign.com/TAD.html)

TAD has inherited their philosophy from Bart Locanthi ‐ recognized across the globe as the ultimate sound technologist ‐ who believed that genuine technology is true to the basic and that genuine technology places greater importance on sound quality than on technology for its own sake.

My TADs are on Altec 511s, which sound great but are a bit big for your small speaker system; but if I had to choose a small horn, it might be Wayne Parham's H290C:

The only caveat: I'd ask Wayne how well the TAD throat exit angle matches the horn inlet angle. Matching those angles is a concern no matter what horn you choose, if you want the best performance. Many of the waveguides out there have much larger throat entrance angles compared to the TADs.

Your horns are probably built for a 2" driver? I have a tractrix 320 horn you can see in my avatar. I know what you are talking about when you say they have a rather narrow dispersion. My system is active and Ive been working with some different xo points and slopes. I believe they work great if you come up with the right combination. Im a bit interested in the yuichi/iwata/tad horns but I havent heard them. They might be what you are looking for.

I've wondered how this Iwata horn might sound with a good driver like a TAD:

The throat inlet angle looks like it may be appropriate for the TAD; and while the dispersion collapses with frequency, it isn't too bad if you sit somewhere near on-axis.
