I'm looking at JBl 2482 drivers. Of course there seems to be quite a difference in price per condition. I could spend the money on a pristine vintage pair for quite a bit of cash. These would be ready to go upon arrival. Or I could buy some not so pretty examples without diaphragms for around $200 each. New phenolics would cost about $100 each. To be on the safe side I could also have them re-magnetized so that they closely match.

To cut to the chase If I refurbished a rough pair with aftermarket phenolics would they perform the same as a pristine vintage pair? I'm wondering if there is a big difference between vintage vs new phenolic diaphragms. Not hung up on looks but would like the same performance. Not interested in the radian diaphragms.

thanks

I havn´t heard aftermarket phenolics. But I would go for original if I where you. I believe a working pair should be about 600$. Driver without diaphragm is not worth 200$.

If it is the low frequencies you want to reach, the BMS 4591 (http://bmsspeakers.com/index.php?id=bms_4591) is the modern driver to use. It costs 304€ at Thomann (http://www.thomann.de/gb/bms_4591_8_ohm.htm). That is 400$.
