UREI 6230/6260/6290 Questions

I have the opportunity to purchase multiple units from a local theater that has upgraded. Units have seen heavy use and are a little beat-up. They've been in storage for around a year.

I am thinking about using the 6230 or 6260 to give my little 1972 Kenwood KA-5002, rated at 30WPC, some more detail and dynamics using the pre outs.

I have performed research and understand that these are professional grade and highly desirable in home systems.

I have Polk RTI 6's that are bi-ampable.

1. Any thoughts on what I should pay for the amps? I may not be able to test them before purchase, not sure yet.
2. Any thoughts on configuration? Given the pre outs, am I limited to one amp? Can I bi-amp? Will I even realize any difference with bi-amping the Polks?

I haven't racked them or listened to them yet.

I used 6230s and 6260s with my 4341s in the early years and they were quite nice amps for BiAmp use ...
Used the preamp-out of an HK AVR to feed an Ashly active crossover - split the signals at 290Hz - low pass fed the 6260 and then to the Woofer,
Hi pass fed a 6230 and then to the Mids/High and UHF of the monitors

later on, I swapped those amps for a pair of Adcom GFA555s - they were probably overkill for the high split but did seem fine with the woofers.

Of course, the UREI 6290s have a fan that can be a bit noisy for home audio use ... the lower power amps do not.

You need to know what elements of the crossover/compensation network are still in the circuit when you use the biamp mode connections on your speaker. A manual would probably tell you. I would guess your speakers are actually biwireable, and that the primary advantages of using multiple amps will be the advantages inherent in biwiring plus the ability to select different amps for bass and treble. That would include in your case having more power and perhaps a sonic improvement over your receiver.

Myself, I would not buy hard-used professional amps for anything, least of all what you propose. Those amps could need work; you couldn't do it, and to pay for it would not make sense. A pull out from a theater and a pull out from a church are very different animals.

To begin with you might try connecting the two channels of your Kenwood to one speaker and see how you like that. Then maybe borrow an amp from someone. But do the manual reading first.

I would not plunge in with those old theater-worn UREI's.

Polk RTi6 ? I'd try a single 6260 (if you fancy that line) and leave the biamp/biwire thing alone.
The manual is on-line and offers the various connection diagrams, including passive bi-amping
(both amps run full-signal and see the driver and crossovers for LF and HF).

Yes, I had definite concerns about them being "rode hard and put away wet", to borrow an equestrian term. I will probably cherry-pick a 6260 to start with and see how I like it.

There is a tradeoff between amp power and its detail. A big amp has several paralell transistors. Many transistors is bad for detail, but good for bass. To get good bass you should use an amp twice as big as the speakers are rated for.

Be prepared to service the volume pots.

Have you actually HEARD them or USED them?

I've actually owned a couple of them (6230 & 6260) and used them long term WITH my JBL 4341s ...
even used the JBL/UREI M552 crossover in that system ...

They are not painfully ugly like your high end fetish brands, and did not sell for for $30,000+
- but they are quite sufficient for a lot of folks, and in good condition, the sound is NOT bad at all.

I'm in Wausau- just 30 min. North of Point! The amps are at the Grand Theater and I know the Technical folks there.

I am glad I checked in with the forum, very helpful. Hoping to get back in there and pick up a 6230 and 6260. I saw them for the first time the other day and didn't really take the time to pore over condition, wanting to research them first.

I revisited the amps today- there are 2 6260's and 2 6290's available.

They are no not so bad as I thought. My first review was in a pretty dark little closet. Once I got them out into the light, cosmetics are really quite good and my friend assured me they have not been abused. The venue generally has on average only one or two shows per week and these would have been used for dress rehearsals, sound checks and the performances themselves.

I made my offer and hope to hear from management tomorrow.

Looks like I'll be picking up a Yamaha P2201 over Christmas. I will use it with the pre outs on my Kenwood KA-5002 for now but eventually would like to pick up a Yamaha control amp and tuner- maybe C-4 or a C-85?

Anybody have experience with the P2201? When I get it, I may need some help with making connections from the RCA preouts to the Yamaha.
