Is it possible to make it work

Join two horn drivers to work in the same horn?
Example two 2451 in the same horn?

Hi Niklas

This practice of "doubling up the compression drivers into one horn" used to be done all the time in the Sound Reinforcement field to increase power handling per horn . JBL's part number ( used with 2" drivers ) was the 2329 throat assembly . Altec had many - I can't remember the part numbers.

The problem with the concept is that all "Y" throats induce some phase cancellation above a certain frequency ( say above 10Khz ). Decades ago , this wasn't considered much of an issue - but - now it is .

EV has "Manifold" loaded adapters that claim to do away with these cancellations - but I am not aware of any one using them at home.

JBL uses three drivers on one horn device (the waveguide for Vertecs)

Martin Audio uses three drivers also on a waveguide

Both of the applications are "Line Array" systems used for concerts.

Right ! My bad. :( I had wrongly excused these from my comments since they enter the diffraction slot of the CD style wave guide through their own individual throat section. These long narrow throats ( geometries ) push the cancellatons up to the upper FR limits of the 2435.

Aha,

well in the Vertec, the drivers are on the side to another..
I ment ovar and under each other. but what difference would
that make.

I was also thinking of cancelations in high frequency.. maybe
if there would be a cross @ 10khz it would work.

My idea with this is lower distorsion for HIFI purposes..

Though, maybe it would be just easier to use some small
10" or 6.5 driver and cross the horn higher..

Tom Danleys Unity horn would appear to be such a device.

There is much written about it (google it), and now it is licensed to Yorkville.

Supposedly it overcomes the phase and other drawbacks, as well.

Here is a photo of the midrange/high unit.

NH,
For “HiFi purposes” (filling a domestic living space with music), use of horns with single drivers is sufficient to reduce distortion to an inaudible level given the marriage of top quality components of compatible design. When designing any loudspeaker system, concentrate first on reproduction of the speech range where human hearing is acute. Then when you get this decade (300-3000 Hz) right, then and only then, are you in a position to tackle reproduction of the extremes. If at the onset, you bifurcate this critical range into separate frequency bands, then you have just severely handicapping progress towards audio perfection before much in the design process has been explored. If distortion still remains a concern, use an active crossover and dedicated power amplifiers for each driver.

WHG

Hi Bill, always nice to see you here!
What horn and driver combo, if any, do you have in mind that handles 300-3000hz?

It would appear much easier to find a cone direct radiator midrange to handle this range, but I happen to still like horn midrange.

BTW, how did you fare during Ivan?

Hi Mike,

The Japanese compression drivers listed below exhibit superior performance but at an esoteric price point. Unfortunately TAD does not make a speech range compression driver yet.

Bill
