Hello boys..

This is a question for you if you have both the 2240 and the 2245. If you gently press on the spider on both woofers, are there any difference in the stiffness on the spiders?

I have two 2240 speakers and a 2245 kit, where it feels like the 2245 kit has stiffer spider... Shouldn't be the other way around or is it because of the longer travel and lower fs? I have bin wondering over that detail for some days. I just have to be sure of a thing here..

kind regards
Martin

Hi Martin,
Sorry about the title, but when you "press on the cone" - you have got more going on than just the 'spider'...
Take a look at the surrounds of both speakers: 2245 has foam roll surround and the 2240 has the double half-roll cloth. Two very different materials. And: Compliancy. Not such a big word. Now, take a look at some figures:
MODEL Vas MMS PE Xmax just these for now....
2245 821.2 185 300 9.65
2240 481.4 164 300 5.59

The Vas = Compliancy MMS = Cone Weight in grams. PE = Power Xmax = Movement in operation [some will say 'overhang or underhung measurement from top-plate]
When looking at these the power is the same. So under the same power, you have more "travel" with a "heavier" cone having more "compliance" in the 2245. The 'combination' of spider AND surround will determine Compliance. However, my "guess" is that the 2240 may be stiffer.
I hope the above has given you some more to think about.....
