2226h up to 800-900hz - your experience

For front stage in a home theater, I am using enclosures with a single 2226H with 4722-HF horn/driver on top. Acoustic x-over is 850hz with LR24 slopes.

I feel that dialog tends to be a little "muffled" and the sound is not as transparent/open as I would like it to be. Is the 2226H just not good enough to be driven to 850hz? Or do you think it could be because of my crossover settings? (I am using an active solution, but as JBL does not have a fixed preset for the settings, I have found the settings myself by measuring).

JBL is running 2226 up to 1khz on 3678, I'm also at the moment when used with 2435 on PT waveguides. But I agree that it's a bit high for 2226. 2226 sound better when crossed at 5-600hz.

The 2226 performs good punchy midbass, up to 500 Hz, then many other things sounds better. For one year I crossed my 2226 at 800 hz and had the same feeling about the sound as you. Then I ended up with a different 15" (non Lansing in this case) but with a 30 grams lighter cone, and that solved my problem. Crossing with low order crossovers can also make a lot of mud, if not done right. The 2220 makes good midrange, but not much bass.

I use them up higher than most, but I also run SET tube amps with less than 10 wpc.

My opinion only but I like them for their midbass/midrange reproduction, even as high as 1.6Khz depending on the horn/driver above.

I'm planning to construct front stage with 2226's (not sure if single or dual yet) and 2446/2385 CD/horn. I am with you not wanting to run the 2226 all the way up to 800 hz, and they say the 2446 can go down to 500 Hz, but I'm a little nervous cutting it that close. I will run active digital x-over and can go as steep as 48 db/octave. Think I'm safe starting that at 600?

I routinely use the 2446 CD down to 650Hz without problems and have pushed them hard on occasions. I use an active 18dB per octave crossover.

In my case the region below 650Hz is being handled by a pair of JBL 4648A Cinema cabinets, which are loaded with 2226 drivers. They've got a very punchy bottom that is rock solid to 30Hz after EQ.

Hello Jonas, I agree with you on the slightly muffled sound. When listening to the 2226 in a reflex box tuned to 40 Hz, I found this when the xover was above 4-500Hz , even at 24 dB/Octave. I would try to use 4 or 500 Hz. Best JA

Some have suggested that the 2035H does a better job higher up, while still retaining the SPL capability of a 2226h. This would follow since it has a motor that is better featured for HF performance (shorting sleeve), where the pole saturation cusps of a 2226h would seem to matter more with high power bass where flux modulation distortion is more of an issue. In home, either will be low distortion but the sleeve likely makes the 2035H a better contender.

Of course, I can't be any more specific since I've never heard a 2035h, though I do have a quad of them to try :)

Eerily similar ... I actually have 3 4648a's but they are just so darned big, I was thinking of pulling the drivers and building 4cf boxes for single 2226's and sell the other 3.

I would like to, just can't feed the 2446's down that low, and really don't want to get into a 3-way. Sigh ...
Think I will start at 600 or 650 with a LR or BW 24 and see what I get.
