Ive been wondering about all of these new alnico "top of the line" drivers. I know the difference between the 1500Al and the 1500AL-1 is winding length of the voice coil, higher BL and higher power handling, less power compression. What they made with the others Im sure I can read about in other threads. The mechanical differences is one thing but can someone tell me about the sonical differences?

The newer models are "light years better" than the older models...

I personally couldn't care less about any of them because none of them are readily available. Quite frankly, it's a joke. Evidently HAdM doesn't feel like making them outside of systems. The current struggle seems to be to get HAdM to build extra 1501AL-1's and 1501AL-2's so people who spent sixty grand on Everest II's can upgrade if desired.

I know what you are talking about. Its really a shame that the DIY community cant get a hold of these drivers. Quite frankly Im not sure whether its benefitial for JBL of the other way around. I bet they would sell loads of drivers if they let them go. I am conserned of what they would cost though. Any way, I might have a pair 1500Al incoming. Not 100% sure yet.

Actually when I posted the question I almost instantly knew it was a long shot. I would be very surprised if someone heard all of these different rares.

There is always room for improvement!

New products needs new technology, or whey wont sell. The question is if the changes made makes the drivers sound better. Increased BL for instance makes for smaller boxes but compromises the lower end. Increased VC gap makes for greater power handling, but the sencitivity suffers. Are these examples improvements in regard of sonical quality or just changes made to have something "new" to show for.

I like what you wrote in this (http://www.audioheritage.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?33310-Everest-dd67000&p=337369&highlight=#post337369)thread regarding room and the Everest/"tall boy". Higher BL maybe wont be an improvement for the organ loving guy having his speakers far from the wall because of better imaging?

The efforts seem to be towards reducing distortion and increasing power handling.

I personally have no interest in the higher Bl 1500AL-1 due to even further loss in the VLF.

The 1501AL, 1501AL-1 and 1501AL-2 are designed for dual fifteen use, which I also don't personally have any interest in.

Rumor has it that there will be an 8 ohm version of the 1501AL-2 and that the 1501FE might also be updated with the 1501AL-2 type of software (cone, coil, suspension).

It is a shame that not all the kits (not that any of them are actually available anyway) are interchangeable and that has created the need for two different baskets. I suspect JBL might just standardize on the new basket with the machined relief for the 1501AL-2 type cone/surround.

l thought they messed with the cone material?

Found this post from 4313B in another thread...

So, there sure are a few modifications done to the cone

Dues anyone know the diffrents between 1501Al, 1501Al-1 and 1501Al-2?
Differences to Original 1501AL design are as follows:
1) The 1501AL-1 uses a 25.4mm (1 inch) long voice coil compared to 30.48mm (1.2 inch) long voice coil on 1501AL. This change increased linear (peak-to-peak) coil excursion of the 1501AL-1 design by 50% over that of the 1501AL woofer.
2) New Nomex spider geometry with larger roll shape and softer material for more linear displacement with less restrictive motion.
3) SBR foamed rubber and new surround half-roll geometry.
4) Special stiffer paper pulp formulation with full rear cone side Aquaplas damping.
5) Stronger Dome pulp material (better resistance to damage).
6) Approximately 42% lower resonant frequency (Fs) of 19Hz compared to 27Hz of the 1501AL.

3) Poly-Cotton cloth, Accordion pleated geometry surround with special adhesive damping.
4) Special 3-Layer Sandwich cone with pure paper pulp outer skins over foam injection inner core.
5) Stronger Dome pulp material (better resistance to damage).

Which reduces distortion. It seems to be a real driving force with both the Pro and Consumer transducers. That and handling tons of power.

Here are all the kits, none of which are currently available:

C8R1500AL (5.3 ohm)
C16R1501AL (9.2 ohm)
C8R1500AL-1 (4.5 ohm)
C16R1501AL-1 (9.2 ohm)
C16R1501AL-2 (9.2 ohm)

There are two cores, the 1500AL core which takes everything except the C16R1501AL-2 kit, and the 1501AL-2 core which takes any of the kits.

More head room is always a good thing I guess, more so in the sound reinforcement business perhaps. I wonder how many k2 and everest owners that actually utilize more than 10% of what their speakers are capable of.

Harman is going to see if they can make them available to North America. The designer seemed surprised that they were unavailable in North America and suggested that they be made available as soon as possible. Still no news on the actual transducers though.

Someone asked what the final price was on the original 1500AL in North America before it was discontinued back in 2010 - $1,004.66 each.

Well, still a good far step in the right direction! Hopefully they will consider to let the complete drivers be sold as well.

Really... one would question the application they were using the 1500AL in. As far as I know they are hifi drivers and not PA drivers.

C8R1500Al are available in Europe
Are recone kit for 1501Al-1 and 1501Al-2 available also?

The kits working with your baskets are every kit but the 1501AL-2 if 4313B knows what he is talking about.

Hm, ok. 1501AL-2 cone coupled with a ferrite basket. Probably works fine but what would you call the bastard? :) 1501ALFE-2?

probably wouldn't have AL in it... besides, I'm too busy trying to use reverse telepathy on that middle cosplayer ;)
