Hello,

Ive finally got my hands on the duplex loudspeaker.
Its the 604 8G and it seems to be in great condition. Im very happy with it...feels like i found the holy grail in audio and i am a happy camper.

just one thing. the crossovers are not for the 604. but are the model 501-8a.

a forum friend of mine said that this crossover will reduce woofer activity way below originally intended. 500hz?

the build en looks of this crossover are quite similar so i think i want to have the original components build in here.
problem is that i get confused from all the crossovers i find on the net and im asking for your help to simplify it for me.

Can someone give me the schedule for the original 604 8G crossover

OR

recommend modifications on it and give the schedule for that. ( lets say if 100 diy people all think that a certain mod is preferable than i will try that)

i will not build the crossover myself but will ask a friend to do it for me.

thanks in advance for your replies

kind regards
robin

ps...a link to another thread on this forum that can be usefull is apreciated also

See Jeff Markwart's WebSite (http://home.earthlink.net/~jmarkwart/) for recommended crossover designs relating to Altec 604 duplexes .

- pdf of simplified 604-8H ( or G ) network (http://home.earthlink.net/~jmarkwart/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/604-8h_gsmpl.pdf)

Or buy the duplex crossover being sold by Great Plains Audio on eBay for $109 each. You definitely should not use the 501. The horn in the 604 8g unloads at about 1500 Hz , and your diaphragm would be at risk.

im planning on making a cabinet that will fit my livingroom.
so instead of a wider model im making it higher.

it will be 105 cm tall ( 41,3 inch)
front 43 cm ( 16,9 inch)
back 33 cm ( 13 inch)
depth 33 cm ( 13 inch)

now im planning on making it a bass reflex system.
when i see cabinets for the 604 they almost all have ports that are just holes in the baffle.rectangular.

is there a reason why people dont use a pipe/vent of some kind?

and the dimensions of this hole are they depending on the size of the cabinet in combination with the driver?

"PiAlign suggests a 5.5 cubic foot box tuned to 42Hz using a port 9.5" long and 9" diameter. You can also make the port rectangular, 10.5" x 6" and 9.5" long. These are inside dimensions of the port, and also inside dimensions of a cabinet. No displacement volume has been added, so you'll want to offset some for the space taken up by the parts inside. "

Above is Wayne Parham's suggestion at the audio round table forum. I found it by googling "Altec 604 8g cabinet."

You need to COPY the work of someone who can engineer (I.e. slide rules and actual knowledge of physics) a speaker enclosure. He is an example of that.

Also, the plans for the Altec Stonehenge III are at the Jeff Markwart site mentioned above. There are others, but you need to copy the result of engineering that's been done.

Hi Robin,
Congrats on the 604's! They are indeed rare as hen's teeth in Benelux, just like finding vintage JBL stuff in G/VG condition there...

I wonder how they sound compared to your 4312's!

Good sentiment. It looks like you are almost there.

we have to dewind the coils to get them in the right value and still waitimg for a friend who has the condensatoren ( capacitators?..or how do you call them?).

we are planning to place the crossover behind the potentiometer. so its gonna be a tight fit...but it will work.

i will give pics and a full report when we are done

thanks
