Who has actually done it? I know that Qts and Qes will be raised a bit. But with Fs dropping from 40Hz down to 34 is interesting. I can buy four 2226 baskets for cheap.

Adding a massring is just a mechanical way to burn some efficiency in the upper part of the passband, letting the LF part unchanged (exactly like a 2235 compared to a 2234).
It does not extend the LF, it just reduce the midband, and does not add anything interesting along the way (contrary to aquaplas for example, that also reduce breakup manifestations up high).
This can be done more efficiently with some EQ, and less power burned into the VC.
With a 2226 excursion will probably be the limiting factor anyway.

The 2226 has too much mid bass and lower mid anyway, so I don't mind loosing some of it. ;) The difference between a 2226 and a 2241 is the size of the cone, which results in a heavier one for the 18" 2241. I suspect it is how it gets fs 35Hz

2226 and 2241 share the same magnet, same voice coil depth, same magnetic gap depth. Only the piston (cone) is different.

Voice Coil Winding Depth: 19.05 mm (0.75 in)
Magnetic Gap Depth: 8.1 mm (0.32 in)

give it a try if you are serious about it: it is free, has an "added mass to cone" function, plots SPL, power and excursion, and also simulates EQ...

Hi Lee,

From my understanding, adding 35 gr (mass ring) to the 2226 aluminum VC would reduce mid bass about 3dB. If you use copper VC instead of original aluminum I would expect that the VC weight would increase about 17gr, that would reduce mid bass 2dB.

Here are my calculations with 150 Lit reflex box tuned at 42Hz, with 20V applied. I have neglected glue weight and have assumed that about 0.4 Ohm cable resistance between ideal amplifier and the driver.

Regards
Ivica

This software is window-based. No Mac version available. Been on Mac since 1984... But thanks.
