What to do with E140?

I just got a few E140, what kind of "hifi setup" are they usable for? Or are they only suited for PA use??

I used them in my rear loaded horns ( 4530 ) back in the band rental days. 3 a side run by a crown PSA2 and it killed in clubs...

BUT that is very non-linear and not the best choice for critical playback.

For a club retrofit back in the mid 80's I removed the aluminum dustcaps, constructed a ring of copper using 10ga household wire and glued it between the top of the former and the cone and put a paper dust cap on. Lotsa glue....:) poormans 2235.

This was for a club playback system and they had no money for new cones...after removing the 2350 horns we made 4 wide flares out of 1/4 bent plywood screwed to 2/8's that were cut into curves and coated the back with roofing tar / sawdust.

None, really.
Get them sold to some crafty bass player(s) - that's who they were made for and that's where they belong
This is an eminently capable driver but imho close to unusable for HiFi, especially if the orig alu dust cap is still in situ.

PA use is possible as bass in (multiple, stacked) W bins or as mid-bass driver in large systems. Roughly equiv to 2205H/2225H and hence also usable in scoop cabs (who wants scoops nowadays?)

Just add casters and a handle for very portable bass speaker.
Works great with D130, D140 also.
I use two of them with a stereo system. Sounds great.

Owing to the facts that E140-8 VC length is about 0.5" ( about 12mm), and TP is about 0.28" (7.11mm), it seems that Xmax of about 0.1" can be used under not so high distortion , what would correspond to about 100W from about over 40Hz, and owing to high efficiency ( >5%), that would be about 100W/1W ( 100W almost 120dB).
Putting paper dust cup OVER aluminum one (in order to reduce 'metallic sound") with some amount of glue ( say 10gr or more, if possible, really about 50gr would be the best, but any additional mass is well-come.

) between them, and with some kind of network correction I think such driver can be useful in some descent "2-way" box. ( say with Selenium D220-Ti + HM17-25 horn), with crossover frequency about 1500Hz.

The E140 is part of the 4691B speakers I bought, a 2-way system with 2425/2370.

And yesterday I finally got time to connect them and they sound quite OK! But I agree with Ivica that placing a paper dust cap might be an OK upgrade for "hifi" use, so I guess I'll do that! (the alu dust cap on mine have been painted black in the past)

Previous these have been used as mains speakers in a small cinema :)

I think that some kind of work on the network would be well-come to be done owing to:
-no filtering E140, looking at the N4691B network,
-and adjusting drivers sensitivities,
-and all the other things

in order to get 'flat" frequency response.
