I've been browsing this forum for quite awhile now but as I do not own any JBLs I have not posted.
However..I have the opportunity to buy a pair of L100T's locally for $200/pr. Supposed to be in good condition, etc.
Like so many on the forums I grew up wishing I could afford a set of L100's and now I can at least get what I suppose is an updated pair.
Any opinions on these speakers?
BTW, I am NOT an Ebay seller and am not trying to find out what these are worth:)

They're definitely worth $200 a pair if you like that sound. Several members have posted how much they like them.

Thanks for the quick reply.

"That sound"? Can you elaborate?

If you've heard an L100T and like the way it sounds then $200 would be a steal.

Will they fulfill my nostalgia for the old L100's :)
(I'm laughing as I type this!)

We will be having a raffle soon for a pair of L100's though. You might want to buy a few tickets.

After doing a little searching I'm getting pretty excited about getting these. Now I just need to get some appropriate old receiver to run them to complete the picture.
Maybe a Marantz, Pioneer, or Sansui.
It's a shame that since I am in the elec. repair business I haven't paid much attention to the old stuff when they were common. At one point I owned a Pioneer SX1980 but ended up selling for a surround receiver! Now I see that model is extremely valuable:banghead: and I should have kept it.
Oh well, I guess that's what makes this stuff rare:cool:

Search the forums for L100t and you'll see some excellent responses from GordonW and DavidF when i asked similar question. I still have both speakers and a/b with a Sansui 881 I still like the L100's for being more present and dynamic in the smallish room. After reading the responses and adjusting the bass when switching to the L100t's, I decided they were well worth keeping. But they will never replace my L100's.

Shoulda held on to the 1980 laddy. Anyway, the best of the bunch from that "golden era" receiver wars(1976-1980), big beefy and powerful: Pioneer, SX1250, 1280 and 1980. Sansui G9000, Sansui also had 2 more powerful units in which the receiver came in 2 parts...amp section and preamp/tuner section, but I can't remember the #'s. Marantz 2385, 2500 and 2600. Panasonic/Technics made the SA1000, 330RMS per ch.

Well, at least I got a fairly good price for the Pioneer at the time, around $300 if I remember right. Of course that is much less than it is now. I had to change just about all the transistors on one channel, with that much power you had to be sure nothing was intermittent. I also needed a helper to carry it:)
I've seen that Sansui 2 piece unit once or twice, the owners did NOT want to part with them:D I probably would not have space for it anyway, huge volume knobs, must have been 3" diameter!

Definitely get the L100Ts for $200. If nothing else, you can almost certainly re-sell 'em for that or more, if you don't like 'em.

As for amps- my experience with those leads me to recommend Harman-Kardon amps of that time... like the 825/870 pre/power amp combo or the 665i or 655i integrated amp. They're efficient, so a good 60-80 watts per channel or more, will make 'em go very well.

Also, the old Hitachi HMA8500 power amp sounded VERY GOOD on '80s JBL speakers to me. That, and it's matching preamp (something-8500 too, IIRC) would also kick butt.

Another option, would be my personal favorite Pioneer receiver- the SX1010. Just plain a good amp in all respects. I haven't found ANYTHING that amp DIDN"T work well with...

One note on those L100Ts- make sure you don't try to cram 'em into a small room (ie, smaller than like 14'x14' or so). They have SO MUCH bass output, that they can OVERWHELM a small room. Also, get them at least a foot and a half from walls, both in the back and on the sides... do that, and they should balance nicely.

Regards,
Gordon.
