Gum turpentine vs. mineral spirits

I'm getting ready to formulate the JBL cocktail (gum turpentine and boiled linseed oil). My local hardware guy didn't have gum turpentine in stock, but said that mineral spirits is essentially the same thing and can be used in its place. Do I believe him, or keep looking? :confused:

Keep looking. They are different. Specialty (pro) paint stores usually have it, and in my area True Value hardware stores carry it.
