replacement foam surrounds for JBL 128H (L150a)

Hello:

I just received the replacement surrounds for
a re-foaming project (my 1st) on my vintage JBL L150a speakers
( driver : 128H, 9-3/8", white-cone : )

I am concerned about the fit of the SimplySpeakers.com item FSK-12A.

Can someone with speaker re-foaming experience advise me whether
the new surround foam should fit LOOSELY or TIGHTLY around the speaker-cone.
( i.e. the fit between the surround-roll I.D. and cone-O.D. )

Hi,
I have not used that particular kit on the 128 but the ones I have used, the roll should pretty much start at the edge of the cone. It should be a perfect fit.

There are 2 cone sizes for the 12"s. If you ordered from Rick he would ask you to measure the cone so he sent you the right kit. They should basically just drop in with the roll starting at the edge of the cone. If you have to stretch them to get them to fit that's not good. Just dry fit it and take a picture and post it for us. We will get you through it.

What am I implying? It should be quite obvious: Had you looked in this site prior to purchasing the kits from Simply Speakers you'd have found multiple recommendations for Rick Cobb, some of them specific to his expertise in correctly supplying surrounds for the 128H and the issues of varying sizes within that driver family.

You're coming here now with a problem and you're getting the same advice you'd have gotten had you checked here first. Simple. Don't shoot the messenger.

I've used Simply Speakers successfully for surrounds for factory OE subs in automobiles, but since I don't find a 6-inch "sub" to be a critical application and I never analyzed the results carefully. And it wasn't my car. For classics such as the L150A, I will (and did) choose a proven supplier as recommended by the most authoritative experts on that specific product.

actually, I was hoping you might enlighten me about your specific reasons
for your apparent disapproval of surrounds from Simplyspeakers?

Of course, I am aware of different cone-sizes,
hence I included " 128H, 9-3/8", white-cone " in posting.

I did communicate with looneytune2011 about his surrounds ( and 6 other vendors ).

I chose the FSK-12A, as it's specs most closely matched
my measurements and calculations for the best-fitting foam surround.

You bought something that doesn't fit a speaker that many of us hear have experience in re-surrounding and you come here to seek remedy and you have a problem with my attitude? Is there anything more to discuss beyond they sold you wrong surrounds? If you want to argue about their charts and why they should be correct, then post some pictures. You're the one who said they don't fit right. I don't get it.

Let me make this as simple as possible (at least until you post some pics to prove me wrong): You bought surrounds that don't fit right. It's not the first time I've heard of it from your vendor. At least you didn't have them do the work and then come here complaining about how they put the surrounds on the wrong side, as we often hear. Excuse me for suggesting you should "simply" get your surrounds from a qualified vendor who knows JBLs.

its not surgery, no one will die from it, its just freakin' speakers ...
